If you join the likes of dogpages ( http://www.dogpages.org.uk/ ) or the refuge (http://www.therefugeforums.org.uk/forums/) there are so many small rescues out there and I'm sure one of them will be able to help you. Also don't be put of by distance if travelling for a dog isn't a problem, I got my wee sheltie from Wales nearly three years ago, I'm in Scotland and it wasn't a problem getting her as the centre thought I was the best home for her.0

Tulip - have not read the whole thread but I really feel for you as I too was turned down but ever place I have contacted (living in a flat and working = no way I could get a rescue dog) and in your case it seems ridiculous with the set up you are describing....
I ended up buying Zara from the infamous Gumtree tree, over 4 ears later she is still with me and looks perfectly fine...
It is a pity that you want a smaller dog as a friend of mine volunteers for German Shepherd rescue as a home checker and there is so many of them needing homes poor things.. maybe she could sort something out for you...
Where in UK are you?
All the best0 -
thats me
I know someone in Bridlington, who has connections around yorkshire, she seems to be in touch with rehoming centres/people. I'll ask her for you and if she says I can, I'll let you have her details. He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion. ~Unknown0 -
I was turned down by the RSPCA and a small rescue centre ... it made me both angry and sad. I was told my garden was unsuitable and that the dog would be left alone for too long. I told EVERYONE I knew that I was looking for a dog, and a couple of weeks later I was put in contact with a lovely family who were looking to rehome their 2-year-old Xbreed. They were waiting for a space to come available in the RSPCA shelter, so I got to meet him in his home and they got to meet the person taking their much-loved dog. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you find a dog soon.0

When I wanted a dog after my old dog died I approached rescue centres. I had - and passed - a home check. The centre, Lurcher Link, then contacted me to say the dog had kennel cough but would be fine with other dogs in our family including a 14 yr old Yorkie.
I said I wasn't happy about that and got some quite abusive emails about wasting their time.
I'd already agreed that the dog's ID tag had to have their details on, not mine.
So I found a puppy through the small ads and I'm delighted with him...he's nearly 3 now and a lovely little fella.
Could be the best way forward for you.0 -
I know people are saying that you don't know the dogs history if you get a dog through Gumtree etc but on the flipside we got a german shepherd through the RSPCA who had supposedly been rehomed due to the fact that his owner had had a baby & he was only meant to be 18 months old-he was grey within a year.
Poor dog turned out to be a bit on the loopy side & had obviously been mistreat as he was so nervous, terrified of brollies & newspapers. He had several happy years with us before he bit someone (luckily not badly) so he had to be put to sleep before he did some real damage

Well an update today, after all my whining about a dog, my OH had a job away from home today and came home with a puppy  it is tiny and pretty cute but only 6/7 weeks old. The man he was doing the job for 'wanted rid' and this was the last one from 6. The house was disgustingly dirty, the pup has not seen a vet yet at all and has a sore on his paw already  so i think we will have our hands full for the next few weeks. OH couldn't/ wouldn't leave puppy in the conditions it was in so offered to take it off his hands for a tenner. Puppy is a cross between a lab & a lhaso apso (strange mix but wasn't planned). We have never had a puppy so a sharp learning curve ahead of us.
OH and son, really want a GSD also and would love to rehome one, after we make sure the puppy will be fine & settled, where about's is the GSD rehoming centre?Grocery Challenge - Jan £4.42/£200.00

You contact them here, they will send out a homecheck volunteer who will first contact you via phone to arrange a suitable time.
I adopted my 2 white longhaired GSD's from the rescue.
The lady who runs is Jayne Shenstone, who is lovely and very knowlegeable. Good luck.0 -
Thank you very much for the link (have bookmarked it) once we make sure the puppy is well/ teated/vet checked and into classes & settled etc we will definitely be volunteering to take on fostering a GSD until we can find the one that wants a forever home with us

Thank you everyone for listening to me vent... lol i will proberly be posting daily for advice on raising a puppy now. We have only ever had older dogs so a lot of learning to do i think. Mind you - she is so filthy (lying in a coal fireplace) that OH went for a shower and took her in to get some of the soot off her and she is now wrapped up in his dressing gown sleeping so i think it must be like having a new born baby back in the house. (We are prepared for some sleepless nights again:D )Grocery Challenge - Jan £4.42/£200.00
