Protection for new laptop?

I have a Sony VPCEB3J0E.
It has McAfee internet security, the trial is running out and it now wants me to subscribe for another 60days free, then i assume i will have to pay.
Should I take up the 60 day free offer and then download the free protection you can get online or just download something like Avira or Avast now?
My last laptop ended up so slow and had so many glitches that this time i wont be downloading anything as I mainly just use it to access the web anyway.
Some advice on which free protection I should use and how to get it running smoothly would be great.
Thanks

McAfee has been known to slow a system down, if you do not intend to keep running it then you could download and install another one, then if you do not get on with it, re-instate McAfee while looking for another one
Check you only have one anti virus programme active0 -
I have the same laptop and deleted all anti-virus software that came on the computer and installed microsoft security essentials.0

I would uninstall McAfee. It's not as bad as it used to be, but it's still not brilliant. Still a system resource hog with fairly mediocre detection rates.
Free, Avira, AVG (though it does chuck up a load of false positives) or Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0. This has gotten good reviews in the tech press, and I'd recommend that.
I pay for mine, and I use Kaspersky - more out of loyalty and familarity to be honest. I like it, and it's one of the best AVs around, but this year it's probably not the best, certainly in terms of detection rates. Certainly a good AV, but there are possibly better choices out there.0 -
avast 5 free + malwarebytes if you don't want it to slow down like the last one (which is curable if you still have it)!!
