For the amount of work involved the tensioner should be replaced as on most cars its recommended and a false economy not to do as the car is in bits anyway.
Did the original garage phone you and say "we have your car in bits the tensioner looks ok but would you like it replaced"?
nope. like i said, i'd not heard of pulleys/tensioner before today. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all

Randy you need to check on what the maintenance schedule recommends, if the manufacturer says it has to be replaced when the cam belt is replaced (this is usually the norm) and the dealer did not do it then they should be liable.nope. like i said, i'd not heard of pulleys/tensioner before today.0 -
I think the tensioner is a £20 -30 part and if they didn't replace it then they are a bunch of **%$£@@$$%^&&**(((0

I have spoken to 2 other Chevvy garages in the area and BOTH say that the tensioner and pulleys are replaced as standard, along with the cambelt.
The CAB says since TN have offered to look at it, then they should have the car (goes against me later on down the line if i dont let them) to rectify the problem at no cost to me. They also said that I should push for a courtesy car, as its their fault all this has happened. She told me to google Motor Industry Code of Practice which will help me know my rights (surprised no-one here suggested that) if it has to go further. She said to get Smiths to write me a report about the damage etc, to serve me as an independant witness.
I said I dont trust TN and she suggested after they do the work, to take it back to Smiths to be checked, which I was going to do anyway. I'm just afraid TN are going to look at it and say "no, its nothing to do with the cam set up" all pretend its another part altogether and bill me for it. after all, I dont know whats going on in their workshop to my engine, do i??If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all

Bear in mind though that it doesnt sound like the AA or the current garage have done a full inspection. They are guessing. They could be wrong and it is easily fixed.
The fact the maintainance schedule states it should be changed is in your favour.0 -
Take it back to TN - in their shoes I wouldn't commit to anything until I had had a chance to have a look at it either.
If you think they are trying to evade responsibility after they have looked at it, ask for an independent inspection.0 -
TN have it and as started work quickly on it yday. 2 hrs after it left Smiths, TN phoned to ask my permission to take the cylinder head off, so they cud "see the extent of the damage". not heard from them since, but i'll be ringing them this avo.
my daughters boyfriend who is an apprentice mechanic also got me the phone number of the OWNER of all the TN garages in the area lol seems his boss has a pal who knows him. so i can threaten them with that mwahahaIf you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all

I don't understand why main dealers, particularly, baulk at sorting out things like this. Even if they have to rebuild the cylinder head the cost to them is tiny compared to their overall income and the adverse publicity that can come about through internet publicity like this thread must be more damaging.0
