Tenerife Question?

We have been looking at Tenerife Los Cristianos or Adeje resorts for 4 adults and 2 older children, I have found several hotels but

1) Is it worth going half Board for and extra £880 3+ Star hotel

2) 4 Star hotel for similar price but Self Catering.

Is food dear here? as H/B is only £14 per person per day.

Also do not want roudy areas but dont want to be isolated either.

we went to tenerife two years ago when the pound dropped against the euro, and it worked out expensive. if i remember a small glass of coke was 2 euros = 2 pound, large bag of local crisps 2.80 euros.
a decent meal was from 80 euros upward, without any alocohol drinks, just water, for 5 adults and 1 child. we did find a restaurant in Los Chris that done a 3 course meal for just under 10 euros each, but most were a lot dearer. there are a lot of chinese restaurants that do all you eat, cant remember how much they were, but dont buy the alcohol drinks there, as they were quite dear.
i would personally go for half-board, as most hotels will let you have a packed lunch for dinner, and you can go out for tea,
    hope this helps.

We went sc to Los Cristianos last year, we loved the apartments and the area but it worked out so expensive, it cost £4 for a loaf. Food is really expensive over there now, we will definitely go back but on a HB or FB basis.

We never choose half board because we love eating out at night.

However financially you would be better off going half board, but bear in mind that it is not only Tenerife that is expensive.

Hi All,I have just returned and am somewhat surprised at a number of the comments,we ate at quality restaurants most night and found it cheaper than the uk.The monkey restaurant in the centre opposite the fountains is one of the better retaurants and we were getting a very good fillet steak for 15 euros !!,if you walked towards the area near the english bars there were numerous bars doing pub type food for 6/7 euros

Thanx for all the replies We have decided to pay £880 for H/B purely because I can budget this in and it seems to be a far price as this equates to 16-17 euros (at todays exchange rate) per person per day just hope the food is OK staying at the Christian Sur?

As We (parents) will be paying for everyone including my oldest son and his girlfriend ( both would have just graduated) and our 2 younger children (12 and 14).

I can not beleive the comments going on here. We go to Adeje 4 times a year and it is so cheap. We eat out every night at Porto Colon or at the top strip: Beef tenderloin in garlic mushroom sauce with salad and fries 8 euros, half roast chicken with the same, 6 euros, bottle of wine 8 euros, 1 ltr. Sangria 5 euros, cocktails 5 euros. There are numerous cafes where we get a light lunch, steak sandwich, cheese baguette, fries, salad large beer and a coke 10 euros. All of the restaurants will give you the first drink free as well if you ask for it as a condition of you eating there.
Mazio, good on you, hope you have a lovely time, just keep the kids away from Veronicas!!!
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

We're just back from Costa Adeje, the Paya Fanabe area, we were there over Christmas and New Year. The first week we were there I don't think I saw a football shirt being worn, if you get my drift - along towards playa torviscas it went a little bit more football shirt / egg and chips but was by no means rowdy or Butlins in the sun.

We stayed at Hotel Isabel, it is set out like a Canarian village which works out well because you don't have lots of footfall past your door - which would wake me up from my little siestas if it happened.:D

When we ate out we walked down to the restaurants on the promenade, most of them were offering very similar menus and were ALL very nicely cooked and presented. Originally because we had a villa in the Hotel I planned to be able to cook healthy dinners in between eating out, but because the food was so good we ate out nearly every night.

    Prices -

Chicken cordon bleu, canarian chicken, fajita, other meat dishes were around the 9 Euro mark and came with vegetable, a timbale of rice and sideplate of fries.
hubby had fillet mignon which was around the 15 Euro mark.
PAsta was 6.90 for the biggest plate of pasta I've ever seen.

Drinks - fizzy drinks were around the 2 euro mark for 400ml glasses, a half bottle of San Valentin, the local wine of my choice, was 6.80, whole bottle was around 13 Euros.

There were places offering pizza / burger / chilli con carne type menus that were doing 3 courses for under 10 Euros, this was more towards the playa Torviscas side of where we were.
We could have gone there to save money, but tbh when I'm on holiday I eat what I want, not what is cheapest - we're not completely skint, so I do like to have a treat.

Watch out for the places who don't advertise the price of their drinks - in the Bahia Beach restaurant we were 6.75 for one southern comfort with lemonade. Other restaurant will serve you a little bread roll with butter while you wait for your food to come, then you notice on the bill it was 1 euro per bread roll you didn't ask for.

Siam park is 40 per adult, 20 per child, iirc, it was "steady" rather than packed to the gunnels when we were there - a 5 minute Q for rides/slides. Well run, clean and plenty to do in a day.
I have read reports it is crushingly busy in summer / peak periods, in which case I would avoid it.

We did a submarine safari in a purpose built sub, free pick up from our area by coach round to the Golf del Sur area next to the airport - while it was another trip that racked up the Euros is was fantastic to see stingrays so close up ( the diver leaves the sub and takes the ray round the boat by way of fish under it's nose to get it to swim - free food for the rays and other shoals of fish, we get to see them close up - works well for me)

Overall, the holiday was way better than expected, I went hoping for some sunshine and a nice relaxing break over Christmas and New Year, but we enjoyed it so much we're hoping to go back next year ( unheard of in this house for us to visit the same place twice)

p.s. just spotted the post saying you've decided to go half board.

hope this helps someone else then....;)

When we went to the hiperdino supermarket, yes there was bread at 4 euros, but the one person sized baguettes are only 33 cents each, a full sized baguette was around 80 cents, if you went further into the supermarket and found the loaves of bread that look like smaller version of our bread, you would have found a small loaf with about 16 slices in it for 1 Euro. Called Pan de nolde, think it's made in a factory rather than by hand, but it's good enough for a little lunchtime sandwich. Watch out for the grated, oiled and sweetend egg yolks that are next to the cheese - they look like grated cheddar but give you a bit of a shock when you bite into them...:rotfl: herado huevos or something, can't rememebr now, should have remembered that huevos are eggs.:o

I don't know where this 4 euro loaf comes from. I live in Los Cristianos and buy an English loaf for less than 2 euros from Iceland.
Mazio, Cristian Sur is a good location to get around and it has a good reputation.
