Thanks boots_babe, you have given me something else to think about. I will definitely look into San Diego, I find it so confusing when you want to go to 2 places

Another vote here for San Diego, we went last year for 5 nights before Vegas, going back for a week this year. The advantage is being so close to Vegas you won't have a long flight there, you can drive it in less than 5 hours. Add to that probably the best climate in the USA and you're onto a winner.

We have also driven to Key West from Miami and loved it there too, but I think it makes more sense to stay around the West Coast as you are already going to Vegas.

Is there a lot to do in San Diego tingtong? Would it suit us as the beachy relaxing part of our holiday?

San Diego has stunning beaches if that is what you are looking for. It also has a great climate in May, occasionally goes wrong in June when they suffer 'June Gloom' but it also has great hotels, restaurants and the world's finest zoo, if you like zoo's. I am lucky enough to visit on almost an annual basis, I would live there permanently if I could. A one hour flight on Southwest Airliines is the easiest way to get there from Vegas, the drive takes 5-7 hours but has nothing particularly to recommend it

There's plenty to do in San Diego if you want to but it can also be very relaxing if that's what you want. Have a look at these links to give you some idea:

Personally I would go to San Diego before the Florida Keys, maybe best to go there as part of a Florida holiday so you can experience a bit more.

Coincidentally when I started reading this thread I thought I would recommend San Diego - then read down further and found others already had! We stopped there for 3 nights last year as part of a 3 week tour of California before going on to Las Vegas and it was one of our favourite places out of everywhere we visited.

http://www.a-zsandiegobeaches.com/ should give you an idea of some of the beachy areas if that's what you're looking for.

Alternatively, we stayed at the Best Western Island Palms http://www.islandpalms.com/ which isn't on the beach but is in a lovely setting on Shelter Island overlooking the water and would highly recommend it. The hotel has a lovely laid back relaxing feel but is only 10-20 minutes drive from the downtown area or attractions like San Diego zoo, Sea World etc.

You should change the thread name to San Diego??
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

    'June Gloom'

San Diego also suffers "May Gray" and the chances of a cloudy May are enhanced when its La Nina conditions .....which it currently is ...... and quite often the clouds linger until July.
