Me and my OH are planning a holiday in May, we want to go to Vegas and somewhere else. I have just come across Florida Keys and I have no knowledge of it at all so I was wondering if any of you guys have been there and whether it is recommended? I have been looking at Key West if that makes a difference

You could twin with Hawaii, there are direct flights from Vegas to Honolulu
If you need any help give me a shout

I didnt do my research well enough before we went and I have to say that we were disappointed. We did like Key West though, great place but totally different to the other keys. Unfortunately we were staying in Key Largo and its a long way from Key West so we only managed one visit for the day.
The Keys have hardly any beaches at all. They are more suited to people who like fishing and sailing.0 -
The drive down US1 through the keys is highly recommended, for one thing it is almost a unique experience in the world of driving out into what appears to be the sea (especially on a hazy day), along the way there is plenty of interesting stops. Key West itself is not really beachy, it does however have a more laidback approach to life than the mainland. You will undoubtedly meet some interesting characters around those parts, last time I was there spent a good few hours enjoying a long drinking session with a Vietnam Vet turned hippy, his stories and company was well worth the visit alone.0

thanks for the advice guys, to be honest i got it wrong as i thought that it was more of a beachy place, back to the drawing board...
Del Hawaii does sound good, although am i right in thinking that will be pretty expensive?0 -
A few years ago, we did a US trip that did Miami, then drove down to the Keys (it really isn't that far, easily driveable in a day with plenty of time for stopping along the way - see the Everglades etc). The Keys themselves are beautiful - we don't sail or fish but certainly had no chance to get bored, there was so much to do. Plenty of things to see and nature reserves to explore - love the less popular keys like Islamorada and Big Pine Key (don't miss seeing the Key Deer roaming around). Key West was ok but our least favourite as it was just like lots of other party places in the US really.
We then went over to Las Vegas for 5 days (absolutely NOT long enough for us, we hardly had time to explore all the amazing hotels, we had plenty to do and we don't even gamble), and finally, to top off a busy holiday, a few days relaxing in San Diego.
I think if you're already whizzing around lots of places, ending up with the Miami-Keys drive is perhaps not ideal, you probably don't want to be in a constant rush. But I can definitely recommend San Diego. There is plenty to do there IF you want to, but also a fantastic place to sit back and relax, sit on the beach, swim, find somewhere nice for drinks, etc etc. Not too long a flight from Vegas either.
Hope you manage to come to a decision and get your holiday booked!0 -
Thanks boots_babe, you have given me something else to think about. I will definitely look into San Diego, I find it so confusing when you want to go to 2 places0

We are doing Vegas then a cruise for 4 days leaving from Miami. That can be quite cheap really, when you think you can get an inside cabin and all the food you can eat for less than $300 and stop off at the bahamas as well. Have a look at Norwegian cruise linesThe common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0 -
Thanks Stoneman, I will definitely look into that as well. I have just been looking at Cabo San Lucas...have any of you ever been there?0
