TV licence holder has passed away - what to do?

My mother passed away a couple of months ago and as her tv licence but beacause it is paid via direct debit (from a joint account with myself) I have not done anything with it.

I have been living in her house while getting ready to sell it and realise that I need to do something with her licence before i move.

I am moving into my daughters house who already owns a tv licence (i do not have one myself as i thought my mothers would cover me?)

What do i need to do with my mother's licence while i am at the house, albeit only for 2 weeks before contracts are exchanged?

I have looked on the website and it looks easy enough to inform them that my mother has passed away but will they need a copy of the death certificate?

Any advice is appreciated!

I would just cancel the direct debit and notify the tv licensing authoritys that the person has passed away and that you dont have a tv in the home so wont be requiring a license.By the time they come to check you would have moved out to a property with a valid license and if new people move in they will have there own licence so it wont matter to the agency.

I would have thought that you don't need to do anything until you've sold the house as long as the license is still valid. You could notify them, but it's probably not worth the hassle until then. I wouldn't have thought they'd need a copy of the death certificate anyway.

Should i just send them a letter from myself once I have cancelled the direct debit and inform them of the property address I have moved to and the date that the house was sold?

I have no idea what the TV licence number is and am worried that it was on a reduced amount as she was OAP (not over 75 tho).

Are they likely to hound me about this - I have heard some nasty stories of threatening letters!

TV licence in her name. Neither you nor she (obviously) now need that licence. No need to tell them where you have moved to, none of their business.

many thanks for all your replies... will they get picky and ask for death certificate?

I am thinking to wait until the day of completion and then cancel the Direct Debit, so at least i am then covered at the new property?

If you are moving in with your daughter who has a licence you are already covered at her property.

If you are not watching live TV you can cancel the licence for your Mother's home at any time you wish.
