So you have had the car 2 months and you have just checked the tyres for the first time since owning it? .

    What's the spare like?
    Not flat is it?
It could hve been swopped just before you took delivery

The spare is one of those temporary ones.

Could even have been swapped with the car next to you in the show room.

That sounds like the plausible answer.

Front left tyre always wears fastest (due to traffic islands etc), either the tyre had been blacked to make it look new (all dealers do this) or they drove the car as a runaround between you paying up and collecting the car.

It does sound like one of the staff at the dealer did a quick swap. As a new tyre on a new mechanically good car will do at least 20k before getting that worn. As it is a smallish car like an Astra, the Astras we had a work used to go for easily over a year on the original front tyres, unless they where damaged, the Zafiras, pretty much a new Astra underneath would also easily do 20k on the front tyres.

Happened to me before in the past, I now, don't laugh, check every tyre when I test drive and then again on collection, and I right down the tyre details in my diary.

I worked at a garage where one of the mechanics used to syphon a gallon out of one car or another every day. He used to say he was making sure the fuel quality was up to spec...........

I have never done that when buying a car, but I've never been unlucky enough to have been caught out like you have.

However, 2 months is a long time to go between checking the state of your tyres.
