PAYG faulty phone, how many repairs?

Hi, I bought a cheap as chips phone last Feb on PAYG. A few months later it 'died' so the shop sent off for repair, a week later it was fixed. 3 weeks later it just 'died' again, I asked at store for a new phone as it is obviously faulty, they offered to send it for repairs again.
As in Feb it will be one year old, if it breaks again in a few weeks time it will be out of year's guarantee and I will be with a broken phone, store said it will be ok they would fix it if it breaks again (3rd time) after one year.
Is this right? Do I not get offered a new phone? I have no way of knowing if the first return was even my original phone as all memory is wiped for security.
I know I could buy another phone but it's the principle, if the model is faulty (common fault apparently on internet info) then surely I am entitled to equivalent in working order? How many times will it be repaired before store accepts it's knackered? Or will I be stuck with faulty phone out of warranty and tough luck?

It's difficult to say. While in warranty you are obviously protected. You could even request that the store extend the warranty given the number of problems you've had. Out of warranty, there is a degree of "reasonableness" to be considered. If, as you say, the phone was a cheap model then the expectation for it to last beyond the initial warranty period is reduced. Your best bet, I reckon, is to get in touch with yor local Trading Standards people and get a bit of legal clout behind you, while you still have the warranty as protection. If I've helped you please show your appreciation by using the "Thanks" button

Yes, but how long is a product expect to last reasonably? If it was a tv, hoover, cooker yes it should last longer than one year (though I don't know how many years).
Store say there is a 2 year warranty from manufacture date, not date of sale so a bit of a grey area. (I spoke to them again yesterday)
It's not sold as a disposable phone but I get the impression all phones are treated as such, which gets my eco blood boiling.
I will contact trading standards, thanks.0
