I've returned it once -- it's happened about four times, as I did quit buying it a long time ago (and then stopped shopping there when we moved towns). I complained only once because I was inevitably cooking it on a Sunday afternoon and had to cut out the 'good' sections to make my meals... I couldn't return the offcuts.

I have recently started shopping at a different branch of the same store and just plain forgot about my problems with their meat.

I just wondered if anyone else had the same problem because I can't believe I'm the only one who's noticed this.

It's true I don't know that's it's rotten for sure, but the smell is pretty strong... and, when I look at the meat that's in the 'clearance section', it looks like that -- brown and skanky, not something you'd want to feed to your children!
  • I know some people who won't even begin to cook their beef until it's brown and smells.

I found this which may help.

The best beef and lamb’s really red, right?

Not necessarily. When meat is first cut from the carcass, it’s a purplish-red colour because it hasn’t been exposed to oxygen. It’s the meat’s reaction with the oxygen that turns it bright red. Red’s good for beef and lamb, but what lots of people don’t realise is that slightly browner meat will often have a better taste and flavour.
The brown colour comes from being exposed to oxygen for longer and it’s one of the signs of a well-aged piece of beef or lamb. Far from meaning the meat is going off, this colour is a natural part of the meat maturing – something that releases wonderful flavours and really tenderises the flesh. Our beef and lamb is matured for four weeks, so it’s at its best when it reaches you. For more information on our maturing process just click here.

I think you're probably being a bit over fussy.

Good beef is brown :doh:unless you are looking for the red bloody beef thats been injected with extra blood to look appealing?

Personally brown beef that smells strong and meaty is wonderful, I wouldnt have my beef any other way.

    Precisely why I asked....your meat isn't off...it's well matured.

  • Despite other posters suggesting that this couldn't possibly happen, we once bought two packs of braising steak from the same supermarket, and when we began preparing them the following day (well within date) we noticed they were beginning to rot - it wasn't storage problem at all given that all other items in the fridge and other meat purchased during the same shop (and hence transported home the same) were fine.

We explained the problem to CS on our next visit, received a refund and an apology and haven't had a problem since.
Despite the name, I'm actually a laydee!

Where did any of us say that it couldn't possibly happen?

i've never had a problem with beef but as posted by others check your storage is correct & if the use by date isnt very long you could always freeze the beef for a few days.a lot of meat is shrink wrapped these days and i personally always rinse my joint under cold water and give it a sniff even when it looks fine.ifyour not happy with the meat dont eat it & return asap.
i have had to return chicken before but had no problems getting a refund/exchange.
  • I don't know about taste as I've always been a vegi and never eaten beef but I do know that my husband won't touch beef until it's gone realy dark and looks "off" to me.
He insists it's the best way to eat it and since he's done this for over 40 years without being ill I take it is quite a safe thing to do.

I purchased a joint of beef on the 23rd December, and as we went away over Christmas I froze it, when we came back I defrosted it, and it had a date of 11 January on it, it was off, as soon as I unpacked it, it was a vile smell. I took it back to the store which was A...a, they didnt want to know, was not going to give me my money back and I had to argue with the lady that it was off, it was stinking the place out. She said you should never freeze meat in its packaging, I have never heard of that before and have always froze meat in the packaging that it comes in.

Did you get a refund then?

    I hope so!

What a load of rubbish the supermarkets can spout!! When I used to buy meat from them, I always froze it in it's packaging. Otherwise you are risking freezer burn if it accdently becomes exposed!
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!
