I'm still very unhappy with the Nationwide for allowing the second payment to take me into the red and way past my overdraft limit. I have asked them to explain, the nice lady on the phone said they (Nationwide) had no option because the second payment was 'authorised'. I said it definately was not authorised by me.

But it was authorised by you. If it's the Cardnet problem then they've 'simply' duplicated the debits. Both authorised ...... albeit with the same authorisation number.

:rotfl:Well thats one way to look at it! I've no complaint if they take the same amount next week and the week after next then going by that logic, better start doing some overtime.

Really? This issue has left me overdrawn. I do not have an overdraft facility. I cannot therefore fill my car with fuel or buy groceries, both of which I had planned for today. Worse still, I do not have sufficient fuel in the car to visit my wife who is in a care home some distance away. Put a price on that!

RBS assured me yesterday that a refund would be made by midnight last night but the offending item is still there. Now I'm told that it will be tomorrow - probably!! - and that I will be charged for an unauthorised overdraft but I can make a claim against Lloyds Natwest.

Last time I had a problems caused by my bank, I suggested that it would be better to keep my money under the mattress. They were concerned that I would be robbed. Too late! I'm already being robbed by the banks.

rodt; Don't get mad get even!

I know right now you are in a bad situation, but you will be able to claim back all your charges, fees, interest and costs for inconvenience. Keep a good record of all your phone calls, all the extra time you've needed to sort this out, and make some sort of estimate for the distress caused to you and your wife.

In my case I've been told to wait till 20th Jan for my bank statement that will have the bank charges for declined items and extra interest. I also had my bank account frozen so was unable to buy the building materials for my bricklayer in time, if he is unable to work for a couple of days I'll pass that cost on too.

Your claim is against Cardnet (part of Lloyds TSB).

I've just been looking up Lloyds bank charges on their website. They charge their customers £5 for each page of a duplicate statement, I'll use that amount for each photocopy I make of my bank statements.

When you write to Cardnet to claim, make sure you provide a detailed breakdown. I can see this being a very expensive mistake for them.

    Their address is:
    Cardnet
    First Data House
    Christopher Martin Road
    Basildon
    Essex
    SS14 9AA

It's the only way to look at it. The Bank apply the file of debits automatically as they're all authorised. As the Bank considers they authorised them ... then they honour them regardless. It's only in retrospect that the duplications show up. Then it's up to Cardnet to put a recovery plan in place and sort it. Essentially by inverting the duplicated cases and shoving them through again as credits.

If the individual Banks started doing piecemeal fixes the whole thing would be more chaotic than it was. Which is why most Banks wouldn't consider chargebacks as that only touches the tip.

Well your idea of 'authorised' and mine are worlds apart. We could bat this around forever but I'll leave it at that.

If you concentrate on 'duplicated' rather than 'authorised' ...... and then remind yourself you 'authorised' the original ...... which was then 'duplicated'. You may find it less taxing!

Although this can be very upsetting and inconvenient if it happens to you, It is actually very rare, and is probably caused by a computer glitch.

I have taken 1000's of card payments both on line, and over the phone, and I don't know of any occasions where this has happened. However although I used to go straight through Cardnet using a card machine, all of the transactions now go through a gateway (Sagepay who used to be called Protx). One thing I have noticed with this gateway is that it will only accept one payment per order number, and will decline any other attempts. I found this out when the gateway changed from Protx to Sagepay, and the codes on my web site needed changing (which they hadn't told me). So when people tried to make a payment, my site would tell them that it had failed (although Sagepay had sent them a confirmation that the payment had been accepted), so unless the customer checked their e-mails they would make several attempts to make a payment. But because the payment did actually go through the first time, it wouldn't accept another.

I don't know if all gateways prevent second payments for the same order number, but if they don't, then I would stick to web sites who use Sagepay (or Protx).
