Day 1 of New Year, What's the Jobcentre Got Then?

  • The trouble I have with all social networking is, I value and crave my privacy. So I've stayed away from LinkedIn and all those people 'networking'. I hate the thought that people could literally track your entire life, piece by piece .... psychopaths I mean. I've encountered a proper one in the workplace that was very very very nasty in the past.... and wish to remain hidden/anonymous even though it was 15 years ago. It still chills me.

There is quite a high 'stalker' possibility; I've tracked down old colleagues and checked out what their new jobs were through linkedin.

BUT.. if you want recruiters to find you, you need to be publicly visible. I've been offered some rather high paying jobs out in Dubai through this (72K tax free!).. no plans to relocate so i just decline them.

There's a lot of IT jobs in there. If you want i can search the job section for you

I've no idea what that job entails, Generali, but as far as I can see I'm not the only one - the person who wrote the job description didn't know either.
it's a glorified junior project manager role even though it's a business analyst role. the scope is so broad that it looks like you would be the project managers beach and made to do all the leg work for the project manager.

the skills needed for these roles are patience and most importantly front office experience.

    decent rate.

I think you will find that on the Jobcentre site, when a salary/wage is not indicated the wage will always default to MEETS NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE.

The Bus Driver Job advertised is with a part of Western Greyhound, who are a very decent employer and have pushed pay levels up in the Devon/Cornwall area and have forced the large Plc's (Worst & Stagecoach) to raise their pay rates.
I knew somebody who was driving for WG a few years back and it was only a smidgeon over NMW. And you'd still need the license to even apply for that one as there are enough people with it already that they don't have to offer to train.

P.S. I think the Job as a SOLAR SPECIALIST sounds interesting ;)
Whatever one of those is .... do you stand around pointing at the sky all day saying "That's the sun, that is. Oh yes."

    Oh, there's a job section?

I am in LinkedIn, I was "made to" join it by somebody I was doing work for 4 years ago. And just found it pointless. If you don't start by "knowing someone", it's difficult to see where you'd start with it.

I'll see if I can find my login.

As for why I am looking in the Jobcentre, I am not - I was using it as some indicator of "there are no jobs out there". I'm not really looking for a job, I need to move first. But caught in the Catch 22 trap: Need to move to get a job, where to..... so just looking at many JC offices to 'compare'

Pasture - ever thought of IT consultancy? That way you can live anywhere and work will pay for you to travel to clients? There's people that I work with who live in north wales, newcastle, devon.. they just travel to where they are needed

BTW, you know a lot of firms will offer relocation money? I got my current job (in London) whilst i lived in Cardiff and they gave me a grand in expenses to move.

I suggested consultancy the other day on the nice people thread 3 nice as pie. Yes, Pastures, have you had any more thoughts about maybe being a consultant? As several people are suggesting it to you, would it be worth looking into it a bit more? Like I said, if some of the interfacing with clients is not your thing then how about getting one or two nice intelligent bods to be your agent and get the work in and manage the jobs between you and the clients so you do your expertise stuff and the agent/rep sorts out all the other stuff? Probably worth a try, surely. And if it doesn't work, well, ok, at least you gave it a go. It might work, mightn't it. It could be good if it did. You could do very well. And just do the work you specialise in and as I suggested, any jobs you don't want to do or that are not appropriate to your skill set you just say sorry, no thanks, and then it would be good to pass those jobs to some other people to do, either just for free to be helpful or you could ask for a 10% referral fee, which would be a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Etc. Ok, maybe this isn't your cup of tea so I won't keep mentioning it and I only mention it again here cos here's someone else making the same suggestion. All the best, mc

While I have about 25 years varied IT experience, at every level, which is now a bit dated as I've not worked "in IT" in that sense for a number of years, I'd not even get an interview for a consultant job as I'd not tick most of the boxes and I am not a 'consultant' type of character.

I have never ever ever known of a firm to offer relocation money. I have heard of people who have got some, but it's never ever been available in any job I've ever done.

Today's full offerings from my Jobcentre (next nearest one's 20 miles away).

    1] Administrator/delivery person/dogsbody. 20 hours/week, £6/hour
    2] Hospitality Assistant Manager. Full-time. £15-17,000.
3] Party plan rep, !!!!!!!!. Commission only, part-time. (Apparently MSE won't let me type 0r1flame)
4] Bus Driver. Must have full PSV/PCV license. 36 hours/week. National Minimum Wage
5] Temporary holiday park receptionist, experience required. 40 hours/week (between 8am-9pm, 7 days/week). National Minimum Wage.
6] Premier Inn Receptionist. 40 hours/week (between 7am-11pm). National Minimum Wage.

Hard to know where to start with that lot ..... which one would pay your mortgage/rent?

Lol ! Just like "burger flippers" (a term that has been used by some bulls on this forum) on minimum wage, who needs 'em, eh ? No need for anyone to take those jobs if they get qualifications. Bus driver, hotel receptionist ? They don't deserve enough money to be able to support themselves. At best, they might be able to rent a small flat or room from a BTL landlord. If the bus driver or administrator had anything about them, they'd be a landlord instead, but they obviously aren't clever enough to spot the opportunity to make £££ out of property and become a much more worthy member of society.

Please note that this post comes with a large dose of sarcasm.

Can you link to people saying that people in low-paid jobs don't deserve enough money to be able to support themselves? I've not seen that view on here as far as I can remember.
