Anyone use/used either of these and are they worth it, or should I be looking at one of the more expensive ones? Classes not an issue for me, just use of the gym.

If you've no interest in classes then I would pick wherever is handy to you, at a reasonable price. Pure is meant to be good, at least all the equipment etc is presumably new. I've just heard that they do classes, run by the Personal Trainers, but unaware of the extra cost.

I spoke to the club manager today and im supposedly still getting a good deal. I do know of others paying more and are restricted to 1 club, but I also know of others paying less. Sickening, but suppose its just the way it goes! I have emailed Head Office to see if entering a new contract and/or paying upfront for a year will reduce the cost.

One of the clubs is halfway between my 5min walk from home/work, so its all very handy. Which is another reason why I shouldn't move elsewhere!
  • I've been a member of LA Fitness in Salisbury since August with a 18 month contract: initial montlhy fee £31.50, new one £32.17 (VAT increase is correct, nothing to say...)

Does anybody know why such a gym membership is not exempted from VAT? I've incidentally found on the HMRC web site the notice 701/45 that claims it should be exempted from VAT... but I'm not an expert in all of this and my understanding can be wrong :o

I like this club by the way: friendly staff, always someone there to help, it's clean, people don't come to show off

I tried to post the HMRC link but am not allowed because I am new!

I've just had a quick look at this - I think it is only for non-profit making organisations who are not influenced by commcercial influence, who supply a sporting activity/service. I think gyms run by Local Councils are exempt from VAT and any charity sporting events, etc. Commercial gyms are defo only in it for the PROFIT!! Lol.

Yes I agree with you about LA Fitness - staff are friendly (if not a bit too laid back!), and there are very few posers, so I feel quite comfortable at it :)

I bought a years membership for LA Fitness at Connswater before Christmas and got it for £25.95 per month with 2 months free

That sounds a VERY good deal. I guess there was a £40 admin fee?

    Are you a student?

Lou 49710, did you have a joining fee, and are you a student / get a corporate discount??

I have been quoted £33 per month for a year, with no joining fee, on a Student discount for Bury in Suffolk.... I feel I need to haggle a better deal now!!
  • Sorry, made a mistake with the name - it is Fitness First at Connswater not LA Fitness. I'm not a student and did pay a joining fee of £25. This was about a week before xmas and membership started on 1st Jan. As stated previously I did get a voucher for 2 months free membership which gives me 14 months in total but I only pay for 12 months.
  • That's still a great deal. I managed to get them down to 30 quid in the same gym on a monthly rolling contract. My mate paid for one month in December in there and paid 45 quid !!

Finally took the plunge and joined Pure. Having looked at the member's area of the website, there are loads of classes which are all free (no idea if that will last though) in case anyone was looking for classes. Still not sure I'll use these, but nice to have the option.

Also, the joining fee is only £20 when buying online, not £25 as they have advertised on the website.
  • I spoke to Pure yesterday and am shocked!! The 16.99/mth includes all classes, of which there seems to be plenty!! Wow! So I'm forking out an extra £243.12 per year, for a shorter walk, and to keep Body Pump classes (they're my addiction and there are none at Pure!). Hmmmmmm... Some re-thinking and/or haggling may be required!!

If anyone is interested in Pure they are having an open day this Sat and Sun between 10 and 4. Anyone can come and train as far as I know.

Ahh, I thought they were trying to rip me a new one :o

They have (slightly) bettered my deal, now charging £33 for 11 months + £20 joining fee, I know (!) but the rest of Jan will be free, and I get the joining pack (Bag, padlock & WATER! LOL). So it now works out at £383 for 12 months = £31.91 permonth.....

Although, it is in terms and conditions that they can put the price up as they require, for 'maintenance', or 'improvements'(!).....

Am I sad the reading small print or what! :rotfl:

Does this sound an okay deal to you lot for LA fitness? Sure there are cheaper elsewhere, but it is nice in there and the most convenient for me by far...
