We have a Vax - it does a good job, but clogs easily and is a pain in the rear to unclog when it does this.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

Ahhhh i feel your pain!
We have an American Akita, who appears to shed all the time, i am constantly picking up hair!
The only thing that works for me, is to get a rubber glove and gather the hair off the carpets then hoover them. Which can be a pain in the backside if you have carpets everywhere. We tried hoovering his hair up without the rubber glove, needless to say the hoover broke :eek:0 -
I would recommend, as an accessory, a rubber brush to use either before or after you hoover. I've got the JML Wonderbroom, and it picks up so much more than my dyson! It does require more work obviously, but in my opinion, well worth it. Or if you feel like giving your legs a work out, try using your wellies or any other shoe with a rubber sole!DFD February 2012

Henry Turbo (the electric turbo head version), is the best one I've ever had (and I had a Miele Cat and Dog which lasted for five years, rather than the "average" 20). The Henry also has large (and cheap) dust bags and a very long power cord.0

Feel your pain - with a long haired 38kg of a GS and 4 cats (each different colour) I sometimes just look in despair at the hairballs everywhere (laminate all over) and on the setees (black leather always covered in hair).....
Got one from Argos recently, was on sale half price when I got it, even posted about it on here - fantastic as the "bag" is actually a plastic, see through container.
It is a murphy richards but tried to find it on argos website and it is not there any more - really weird....
It is this one:
I bought it on sale at Argos for under £60 I believe....
Now I see them here:

Thank you all for your advice... I'll see what I can get my hands on this weekend.0

MIELE!!
I don't even have the Cat & Dog version, as I thought it was a bit pricey considering I want to get rid of all of our carpets eventually and replace with laminate. I have one of the cheapest in the range, the S2110 bagged cylinder, and I absolutely adore it (as far as you can adore a vacuum cleaner). It is FANTASTIC at picking up the mountains of hair dropped by our three cats. I actually bought the mini turbo brush to go with this (a larger version is the major pulling factor on the C&D), but to be honest the upholstery head that comes with the cleaner is actually better at picking up hair. I seriously enjoy hoovering the house now...yes, I don't get out much... 0 -
