Borderline Personality Disorder Support Thread

Does anyone else here have Borderline Personality Disorder, also known as Emotional Instability Disorder?

I've had it for most of my life, but was only diagnosed in March 2010. When I'm in a 'good split' I can be charming, funny, and full of confidence. However, this can change at a moments notice, and when I'm in a 'bad split', I become almost psychotic, and dangerous to myself and others.

Does anyone have coping strategies?

I apparently have it but i'm not convinced as some of my symptoms don't tally with it. Since getting the diagnosis i've never had any specific help towards it. Tbh my depression is worse on most fronts so i tend focus on coping with that.

This is my latest diagnosis (goes between BPD and bipolar), and I agree with each of you!

My moods swing from one extreme to another (although I would argue that those extremes are actually very close together), and I am not convinced that this is the right diagnosis for me. My psychiatrist is 'ok', far better than others I have seen but very unwilling to do more than the bare minimum. I understand that he wants me to be more independent, but if I could do that I wouldn't be ill?

I also completely agree about cross stitch - it is my saviour! Unfortunately at the moment I don't have time to do any - trying to do some coursework whilst in the middle of a big old depressive episode. Joy! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

OMG - I have very similar thoughts - my psychiatrist calls it 'black and white' thinking, and since my depression came on, it's got a hundred times worse.

I was originally assessed for psychotherapy, but it was deemed unworkable as I couldn't promise to keep myself safe for the 2 year duration of the group therapy. I told my psychotherapist that if I could do that, I wouldn't need the treatment.

I find that the tiniest setbacks cause me to split from one mood to another. If someone I care about criticises me even slightly, causing a split - I feel like I don't know that person any more. They are strangers to me while I'm in a bad split and I want nothing to do with them.

Please forgive me for this, but I don't feel this thread is relevent to MSE.

I'm a qualified mental health practitioner and have a very good understanding of BPD. I also know its a very controversial diagnosis and am concerned that using this sort of place for support with BPD MAY leave you open to criticism.

I am rather curious to know why you feel a money saving website is the most appropraite place for a support thread. I'm really sorry, but I don't believe it is. There are hundreds of support sites on the internet such as http://www.depressiontribe.com/, http://www.bpdcentral.com/index.php, http://www.mindsupport.co.uk/

Please reconsider your desire to receive general BPD support on MSE. By all means enquire about money-related issues such as benefits, but really, this is not the place and I mean that with the best intentions.

You know nothing of MSE and Ive reported this and your other posts as you are claiming to be something that cant be checked out, stop doing this at once or risk being banned,

Regardless of whether the OP is qualified, the advice offered is very sound. Information like this needs to be shared in a safe environment and I don't think that the MSE website is the place for it.

It's interesting that you had to dig up a year-old thread to complain about this. I had forgotten all about it :T

Sunnyone, I am not going to waste my time with you. It can be checked out by MSE staff. We've already had this conversation and I couldn't care less whether you believe me or not.

    MightyB, thank you.

Two4Tuesday, it was near the top of the Disability & Dosh board. I didn't even look at the date. Last post before mine was on 4th Jan 2011, making it just over one year since anybody last posted. I apologise for inadvertently 'bumping' what is clearly an old thread.
  • Now that the thread has been bumped, I'm curious to know what kind of criticism I may be subject to for discussing my condition on this site. It makes a change from constant benefit enquiries repeated ad nauseum.

At the end of the day though, if I choose to share my condition with others on this site, that's my business. I am still fairly anonymous here, though a couple of people here know my true identity.

And finally, I have found all of the mental health professionals I have encountered to be as useful as a chocolate teapot, but less tasty. The ones on my acute ward were weirder than most of the patients too :)

Munkee, I've read each of your thread #'s since you migrated from your old group to this one, and its accepted you have been a non~poster since January. I'm not sure why you migrated here, an care even less, however with the one exception of your propensity to act as the unofficial self appointed~mental health~MSE moderator I think your general advice to people with MH issues has been reasonable.

It is the case that a large cohort of individuals all revolving around MH issues and needs come here to whine / talk / help each other / vent / support others when they need it and sometimes just talk for the sake of talking. I see nothing whatsoever wrong with that, and I'm surprised someone in your discipline does. This area of the MSE groups in essence supplies a very instant caring support and encouragement service without judgement and necessarily away from regularised formal interventions.

Until your intervention no one has imposed professional judgement, I believe you could offer an objective view to those who need help and support and encourage you to continue to post in this area. Recognising as I do that this group is very good at policing themselves, perhaps if you moderated your input by avoiding making judgements and deciding for others what can and can not be spoken about the whole group can take benefit from your vision and experience.
