Fort Lauderdale to Orlando

Hi,
Booking up for Orlando this year in the school holidays:mad:
I have looked at various flights and found them cheaper to Fort Lauderdale. I've done some checking and it seems to be around 200 miles from Orlando which is fine.
Just asking if there is any downside to flying there. We're having a car for the 3.5 weeks anyway and have accommodation sorted near the disney parks for two of the weeks plus plan to travel around to Miami and other places for the remainder.
Any information appreciated

BE VERY CAREFUL IN MIAMI.
honestly, its not the sweetest place in the world. take advice on where to go, book your hotels and dont go wandering.
Orlando, obviously is totally different, but parts of miami can be dangerous.
Bad Neighborhoods
Most of these areas are in the northern part of Greater Miami, but be aware that just two to three blocks from popular Coco Village, the socalled “Black Grove” is unfortunately quite rundown and dangerous.0 -
FLL is a nice, small, easy to navigate airport. Car hire is onsite - you literally walk across a bridge and you're in the car park. It's well connected to the main roads that will take you north and south.
While there are some really awful parts of Miami - there are loads of nice ones too. We found the South Beach area a great place to spend some time.
If you are making a great saving then it sounds a great plan to me to fly into FLL rather than MCO.0 -

i went to miami last march and was meant to be staying there for the 2nd week but found the sunny isles area where i was booked to stay was an absolute dump.the thunderbird hotel looked like it needed pulling down.
virgin were no use really just offered different places that were ok but would cost 30-40 dollars a day parking, ended up just driving back to orlando after 1 night.0 -
Thanks Karen/Bungle,
Yes, its a decent saving especially as there are 5 of us.0 -
FL to Orlando drive is boring I seem to remember but a pretty straight road so if it's a big enough saving and you're going for a decent length of holiday go for it. I second what everyone has said about Miami. Instead go on the boat trip from FL to Miami, it takes you on the inland waterway past all the homes of the celebrities and we ended up at a fairly respectable waterside mall in Miami for a couple of hours before the return journey.0

the drive from fll to orlando is a fairly straight run on either the turnpike or i95 but is approx 2.5 hour journey.if it was a decent saving then well worth doing.is it direct flight from UK?
another option could be Tampa BA fly direct from LGW to there daily, when i was looking for flights last year the tampa ones were very reasonable as MCO gets booked fast and expensive.0 -
Thanks, how far is Tampa from Orlando. Haven't checked that one0

About 70-75 miles. It is very easy to get to from WDW which is the right side of Orlando for Tampa airport. It takes a bit over an hour to drive, Freeway almost all of the way. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

as above tampa to orlando is a very straight forward drive although i personally find driving in florida easy anyway.
might be different know but it was the cheapest florida airport to fly in to from the UK when checking last year plus the distance made it appealing.
another thing you could do is open jaw flights i.e fly in to tampa for first part of holiday in orlando and then if venturing down towards miami fly back from MIA or FLL depending on which is best price?0 -
Thats great, i appreciate the advice. Will have a look at the flights to/from Tampa tomorrow0
