Increased Spam in mailbox ? anyone else ?

I have always been pretty pleased with myself as very little Spam makes its way into my mail folder. Never much in my Spam folder either. Just in the last few days I have received the usual Meds type email and others, usually Yahoo, same email, different senders,only about 6 but 6 more than I would usualy expect ! I am with AOL. I always report Spam.
Over the holidays I received lots of those dreadful supposedly funny and festive forwarded and forwarded again type of emails showing loads of strangers email addresses. I hate them and always ask friends to only blind copy me or not send them at all.
Do you think it coincidental or is it beause my email is "out there" that this may be happenening ?
