Assembly Instructions are on the IKEA web site in pdf form. (As a newbie I'm not allowed to post links).

    From instructions:

    1. Height of PAX is 236cm, for ceilings less than 244cm the wardrobe is assembled in place - instruction are given for this.

    2. The furniture (i.e. PAX) must be fixed to the wall with the enclosed wall fastener.

From memory the back is a thin board which is nailed on and would not look very nice.

In other words I think you would need to construct a partition wall.
  • Thanks - I hadn't thought of looking for assembly instruction PDFs. I suppose the question of whether a 239cm ceiling height is sufficient depends on whether you have to access the top with an allen key / screwdriver. I can't see anything on the instructions that suggest you do, so we should be OK I think.

I helped my girlfriend assemble hers and they were only about 1cm from the ceiling and had no problems :)

I've also got some in beech and oak that are about 2-3 cms from the ceiling. One thing I did find is that moving them on carpet fully erected can be tricky with no spare headroom. If you have this get the frame (including full width shelves) and back built then put them in position before adding the extra weight of the doors and interior , especially if they butt up to another wardrobe.

I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    2. We're considering making a walk-in wardrobe by erecting the wardrobes with their back to the main room as a room divider (and probably having some kind of shelving - maybe an Expedit unit - on the wall facing the wardrobes). Do Pax wardrobes have sufficient stability and look OK from the back, or would we need to put up a partition wall and erect them against that? (We'd go for the full-depth version, not the shallower kind with the rail running from front to back.)

They have done this exact project in the new ikea 2012 catalogue (go to their website and you can view it online, p14-15). It looks to me like they have fixed fabric across the back of the wardrobes to hide the backs. Do take a look though, I think it looks really good and would love to have enough space to do it.
  • Ah yes - that was what gave me the idea in the first place, but I'd completely forgotten about my intention to look it up on the website! (It's here, in case anyone is interested.) Our room is too narrow to do the back-to-back units on either side of the bed, but watching the video has given me food for thought.

The customisation options are bewildering for the PAX range.

I'm hoping someone can recommend a 'standard' set of options for the 2m wide x 2.3m high sliding door wardrobe. I need a lot of hanging space and then 4-6 cubby holes for storing things like folded shirts/t-shirts and so on.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

I have a couple of related questions:

    1. I'm fancying getting some Pax wardrobes but the catalogue says that you need a minimum ceiling height of 240cm. Ours is 239cm. Would we be able to get away with it, or do I need to look at other sources?

We bought our Ikea wardrobe without measuring the ceiling which was much lower than we realised.
What we had to do was to build the wardrobe upright(standing up,hope I make sense)! And we managed, just needs two people but, was not problem as Ikea furniture always matches on millimeter!
    Best wins ever:
2012: Holiday to LA for 2 adults +2 kids for 4 days
    2013: £2 000 Virgin Holiday Voucher!
2014: $1000 spending money for hols
2015: 8 night holiday to Thailand

We have a pax system but not one with sliding doors. We have zero carpentry skills between the two of us and we got them up VERY easily, all solid and lined up and they've lasted about 5 years. The only problem was the long sticky strip on the corner wardrobe which keeps the door flipping open has come off the bottom end.

    I would recommend them. :)
