IKEA PAX wardrobes - are they easy to setup?

Due to prohibitly expensive quotes from local joiners we decided to look at cheaper wardrobes alternatives for our bedrooms.

We are seriously thinking to buy into the IKEA PAX wardrobes (sliding doors) as the cost is within our budget and they look good with the Oak finish.

Before we go ahead I just like to ask what experience people here have with this system? good or bad?

Specially regarding long term quality and how easy they are to set up by the occasional diyer (any points or assembly tips will be great). Kind regards,

Yes, we have one for our bedroom, got a great drawer for my wifes jewellery etc. Easy to put up, very sturdy when into wall.

    You'll be fine as occasional DIY'er :)

  • Untreated wood; can be treated with oil, wax or glazing paint for increased durability and a personal touch

    The personal touch..

We've had PAX system for about 6 years. Three double units. First one took about 45 minutes to build, third about 15. You do need two people to manouver them and remember to buy the correct height for your room.

You need enough room height to accommodate the diagonal dimension of the wardrobe side and not the height, otherwise you can't stand it up!

  • Yes, we found them easy enough.

I was quite surprised at how sturdy they are.
  • I have a couple of related questions:

    1. I'm fancying getting some Pax wardrobes but the catalogue says that you need a minimum ceiling height of 240cm. Ours is 239cm. Would we be able to get away with it, or do I need to look at other sources?

    2. We're considering making a walk-in wardrobe by erecting the wardrobes with their back to the main room as a room divider (and probably having some kind of shelving - maybe an Expedit unit - on the wall facing the wardrobes). Do Pax wardrobes have sufficient stability and look OK from the back, or would we need to put up a partition wall and erect them against that? (We'd go for the full-depth version, not the shallower kind with the rail running from front to back.)
