B & Q Paint Price Rant!

I think this is really out of order and I want to complaint to B & Q but I'm not sure if I have anything to complain about!
My mum picked some paint at our local B & Q store from their Colours range which generally comes in 2.5 litres and 5 litres. The price for the 2.5 is £12.98 and the 5 litres in this range £19.98.
Well, they didnt have the 5 litres available in my mum's colour (nearly every other colour they did) so I politely asked the assistant about it and pointed out the huge difference in price. I was expecting she would give us the paint at the 5 litre price as we needed a fair bit. She was totally uninterested and said there was nothing else she could do.
My mum had to buy 6 of the 2.5 litres which came to £77.88
If it had been available in the 5 litres, it would have only been £59.94.
So its cost my mum an extra £17.94 ... Surely this is totally wrong? I hate feeling someone has been ripped off in this way, have I got grounds to complain about it? I know I probably wont get the difference back for my mum but I am really angry!

There is nothing they have done illegally I'm afraid. Could you not have requested they order in said colour specifically for you, to collect on a different day?Best Regards

One way to look at is you're paying for the paint and the pot ... so it could be ...
The empty 2.5L pot costs £7.98 and the paint in it is £5 ... £2 a liter
The empty 5L pot costs £9.98 and the paint in it is £10 ... £2 a liter0 -
I had the same situation last year but they asked if I would be willing to travel for it, I said yes and they located what I needed at another 2 close-enough stores.Official DFW nerd no 551 - proud to be dealing with my debts

It's exactly the same with virtually every product sold in the world.
A 400g loaf of bread costs more than half the price of an 800g loaf.
Cinema popcorn - a small popcorn is something like £2.80 at our Odeon while a large, which is about three times the size, is only £1 more.
Your mum could have (a) waited until they restocked or (b) rung around other B&Q branches in the area to find the larger size.0 -
Anyone with half a brain would have gone elsewhere or waited until more stock came in, it's not like they were holding a gun to her head.I no longer contribute to the Benefits & Tax Credits forum.0

Are you kidding me? As said before she wasn't forced to buy the 2.5ltrs, the company just ran out of a certain product line and if she didn't want to buy it she didn't need to.
Give me strength surely you have better things that are more valid to complain about!!!The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

The 2.5 and 5 litre tins have different bar codes, if they have no 5 litre then they cannot 'take' any out of stock, the only ones they could have scanned and sold, and thereby keeping the stock levels right was the tins they had, in this case the 2.5litre.
If they did have the barcode for the 5 litre tin and sell your mum 3, that would have put the stock in a negative level and affected the reordering, and left 6 of the 2.5 litre showing in stock when there were 6 less. Plus there is no facility on the tills for the operator to manually change the price like you are asking for.
Simply put, they cannot sell you or charge you for what they don't physically have in store.0 -

Err thanks for your help - friendly lot on here aren't you. Happy new year to you too. I thought this part of the forum was for venting, not insulting people with comments like "half a brain".
For the other people who took the trouble to reply, thank you. My mum is disabled to local is as far as she is able to go. Also, its not that they don't stock it, they told us they don't supply it (but nearly ever other colour they do. I just thought it was unfair that's all.

Well if you see this to multi quote click on the bit in the bottom right and click on those with whatever posts you want to quote (you can do as many as you wish) it will open them up in a new window once you press reply.
I still don't see why you think it is unfair, the store just don't offer that line of product that is probably a slow seller and they can have better things on the shop floor to sell.
It's akin to you moaning about Tescos not selling one type of beans over another. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

No it is not "out of order" and no you do not have anything to complain about. B & Q have done nothing wrong in selling items at their correct price.
Your mother had a choice, she could accept the goods which were in stock (2.5L cans) or waited until 5L cans came in stock or bought paint elsewhere. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
