Double payment taken out of my bank account

I could cheerfully scream at this point but it will not do any good and there really is nothing else I can do at this moment either but I wanted to have a vent all the same..:wall:
I went to the local PDSA charity shop on 31th Dec and bought £5.90 worth of things, I paid using the chip and pin and thought nothing more about it.
I did not keep the receipt as it was for books which I just took out of the bag and put onto the shelf.
Today (my internet banking has only just caught up from the bank hoilday and new year period) I check my bank and find that one payment of £5.90 went to the PDSA on 01.01.11 and that another for the exact same amount went out the next day.
I called the bank and they are sending me the visa return form thingy and advised that I call the PDSA as they might be able to sort it out quicker and also that the should be made aware there is a problem.
I called them only to be told " well I only have one receipt so it can not have happened" ..end of (spoke to the paid manager and not the volunteers to make sure I did not upset anyone )
I know it is not for a massive amount but it is my money and I am not at fault here as I did nothing other then enter my pin for one purchase of £5.90 remove my card and hand the thing back to the shop staff.
The bank have no idea how it happened but seem to think it must be down to the shop and how they take the payments.
I am trying not to be annoyed and luckly I sold something on ebay this week so can cover the missing bank cash until it is sorted out but that really shouldn't be the point should it ?

This happened to me with a clothes shop. Never found out whose fault it was but I later became aware I wasn't the only one from that shop on that day. The money did get refunded after a short while.
Must be annoying if not a lot is in the bank and you end up paying charges. I suspect the bank would refund if that was the case. Hopefully so anyway.0 -

To be honest, its best they do only have one receipt. Your bank statement shows it clearly DID happen and you would struggle to prove you didn't take 2 sets of goods if they had 2 receipts!

very true although with it being a charity shop if they had 2 receipts for the same things it would look odd given their stock.I still wonder how it happened as the chip and pin thing was meant to be fool proof and as a fool I am use to to breaking anything technical.
It is just very annoying when (although a small amount, my amount never the less)I have to wait for others to sort it out.
Bettie, yes the bank have confirmed that they would refund any charges as they can "see" the error on their system. They say that because of the dates it has to be the shop rather then them but that is not to say they are right.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

The fact that they DON'T have 2 transactions for the same amount suggests they didn't sell 2 lots of stuff at the same amount...except that its showing on your statement as them having done so!Good Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!

Well I have just got back from the Charity shop as they have agreed to copy their receipt for me to send to my bank and they are sticking to the line that they have not had the money and nothing showed up on their chip and pin thing.
It went somewhere though, got the feeling they were not really bothered and not really willing to help at all so guess I will have to wait and see.
You are right though Morty, hadn't really thought it through but clearly they would be about the same priced items.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

I'm not sure if this is the same thing but I no longer topup my 3 account online or over the phone.
The last 2 times I have tried I have had 3 then 5 transactions taken out of my account (3x£25 & 5x£25).
Both 3 and my bank were useless, they both claimed they could do nothing and all I could do was wait 10 days.
Nonetheless on both occassions the extra transactions dissappeared from my account after 3, then 5 days, and my balance was returned to normal.
I totally agree with you, the amount is immaterial, it's the fact that a 'foolproof' system has flaws.
Hopefully this helps and you can get your money back.0 -
I've had similar happen before when the machine crashed and the manager insisted payment had not been taken as a receipt was not printed so they processed it again. I was fortunate enough to be served by a diligent shop assistant who put a note on my receipt detailing this. My statement showed two identical payments and with the receipt and a copy of my statement the shop refunded although the manager wanted to check their records first (which also showed the double transaction).
Sounds as if the Charity shop have not properly checked/ do not want to, but at least your bank are supporting you in this. Hope it gets resolved soon.Sealed Pot Challenge 2011 #11480 -
It's taken as kind of an unwritten rules in shops, or at least where I've worked, that a receipt coming out = correct payment no matter what. Weird, who knows who decided that because it's obviously wrong.0

I've just seen on my online banking that i've been charged twice for the same thing. Phoned bank who said they could do nothing.:mad:
Phoned the company who have said that there bank for some reason has charged everyone twice by mistake ( i used chip and pin):eek:, they did say the money should be refunded in 5-7 working days if not ring them back.Sometimes it seems that the going is just too rough.And things go wrong no matter what I do.Now and then it seems that life is just too much.But you've got the love I need to see me through.:j :j0 -

I don't think any system is completely foolproof and with Chip and Pin, the main aim seems to be to prevent fraudulent use of others' cards, not eradicate errors altogether, so it probably wasn't to do with how you used it!0
