Santander current account - duplicate card transactions

Have any other Santander current account customers noticed duplicate debit card transactions appearing on their online banking? I have two, from December 31, which have been debited twice (luckily both were quite small amounts). Is this a widespread glitch? Do I need to do anything about it (Santander or the original shop?) or will it correct itself?

(other than move to a better bank, of course..)
  • Where does the amount appear?

If it's it only taken off the ‘available balance’, then it’s most likely a glitch on the retailer’s end
and will correct itself when the charge gets properly booked.

If the booking appears twice on your on-line account with a reference: ‘Payment at Tesco £ xxx’,
    then contact the bank.
  • Thanks: it's on the online statement itself so I'll raise it with Santander.

I am not convinced from what you're saying that it is Santander. It has happened to me at er. a more reliable bank. It was the retailer making a mistake and the money was returned forthwith if not fifthwith.
  • If it's a duplicate card payment and it's been fully debited from your account you'll need to take this up with the company in the first instance. The bank will only rase a dispute on the transaction if the company is refusing to refund money which it was not supposed to take.

I have just posted on this thread as well https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2959964

We have had a debit card transaction from HSBC to our local shop go through twice on 31/12/2010.

It looks like a processing fault somewhere on this date.

  • This seems to be a wide spread problem. At HBOS we are aware problems with many retailers. It seem to be the merchant bank that has had a glitch and its something they are working on. I have seen it with brighthouse supersave KFC and many small retailers.

Interesting... thanks for that. I raised it with Santander and their line is:

"Unfortunately, we do not refund payments if they have been debited by a third party. We would ask that you contact the companies concerned to discuss the situation. As the payments have been debited incorrectly by them; I am sure they will be happy to refund you."

It does seem more than a coincidence that two duplicate payments in two different shops came out on the same day.
  • hi i have had the same problem to, with a transaction brought on the 31 dec, a payment left my account on 3 and the 4th jan 2011. i have discovered that the card machines in certain retailers ie card net, there software had hitch and duplicated transaction, i have confirmed with them that we should all received the money back into our account s tommorrow, i spoke to santander today who were discusting not giving a damn, and yet lloyds cause they know there was a glitch there customers had there money into account today, santander as a whole is disgusting and because of this and several other discrepancies i am moving bank. hope this helps they are quick enough in taking our money but not so quick to put it back.
  • Hope the following news articles can help?
