Not wide of the mark at all, We are talking about unbraked trailers here. 750kg is the UNBRAKED limit for vehicles
    under 3.5 tons

The towing dolly would be unbraked, Even if the dolly has brakes itself the cars rear wheels are not braked.
Using devices to apply the cars brakes are a grey area as they are not type approved.

  • Cars plated at 1500KG and the trailer it is towing is plated at 1800KG... Is this a legal combination?...

I used to get grief of a boss for a 3300KG plated Trooper towing a 3500KG plated plant trailer *not towing max weight either*... Said it was illegal?

    Anyone clarify?

.... Living in the sticks I've always towed what Ive wanted with what I want... If it has a tow hitch it'll do..
  • I passed an old fiesta being towed by a transit van with a bit of rope on a duel carriageway the day before christmas eve. The fiesta had someone sitting in it operating the brakes.

    :rotfl:
  • i towed a vauxhall omega with a vauxhall nova lol

i also towed a vw camper van with the nova and a pug 405

im not sure what my towing weight limit would be as the nova was a 2 litre with 2litre cavalier brakes so esentially it was a cavalier

Now I agree with you as you have added the word unbraked and the rest is correct, however the grey area is arguable in court and most plod can't be bothered with the hassle unless they're having a quiet day.

    @flying high

Not legal, its plate weights that count and that doesnt even need a trip to the weigh bridge (Police had a crackdown near a local riding stables)

If you are doing it for reward then it also fall under drivers hours regs (greater than 3500kgs) so vehicle should also have a tacho fitted and if also may come under the heavy goods vehicle operators licensing scheme.

Its even worse for those who hold post 1997 licences for those that do handy guide here, licensed to tow pdf

Did that many a time down motorways in my youth. Must have done hundreds of miles on a piece of rope.

The worst I saw was mnay years ago on the M1 southbound. Luton transit van being towed by a small (old mini size) nissan (i think). What made it so bad was the van had no sign on the back of it and the rope was so long I started to pull in between the 2 until I saw the row and had to switch back into lane 2 in a hurry because if I had hit the rope it would have pulled the transit into the back of me

  • The unbraked trailer limit is set in law at 750 kg gross weight ........, over that weight it HAS to be braked.
The weight of the towing vehicle has NO bearing on this.
