Anyome know where I can hire a Dolly trailer from? Ideally one that folds way and can be chucked in the boot of my car?

  • We only use ropes or bars. Plus we dont have the space at our garage. Would be a good money earner I guess. Hmmm...

Only legal for emergency recovery, They have clamped down on them big time.

Unbraked trailer so cannot exceed 750kg gross laden weight or 50% of the cars kerbweight whichever is less.

If spotted and you pass somewhere safe to stop you may get pulled. I was behind one on the A42, Patrol car spotted
them and pulled in behind, As soon as they passed the 1st junction on came the blue lights.

Much better off with a proper trailer. Not that dear to hire them.

So how come I regularly see large camper vans towing small cars (not on trailers) on the M25?? Does it mean all the cars weigh less than 750kg?

No. It's legal provided the towed vehicles brakes are utilised then the towed vehicle becomes a braked trailer. There are mechanisms on the market that can be fitted to a vehicle to do this.

You can buy mechanisms that utilise the brakes on the car being towed. BUT they have not been type
approved so are a grey area also.

A vehicle in excess of 3.5tons can tow trailers heavier than 750kg. I think the only car with a gross weight
of less than 750kg was an Axiam?? or something like that.

Sorry, you're a bit wide of the mark there. Vehicles less than 3.5 tons can tow trailers heavier than 750kg, provided:
1: The trailer is BRAKED and the brakes are working.
2: You do not exceed the maximum towing capacity of the vehicle.
Please see the example below using a VW Passat turbo diesel 2000 - ish model.

    Make: Volkswagen
    Model: Passat
    Variation: 1.9 TDi 130 bhp 6 speed
    Year: 1998 -
    Kerbweight (Kg): 1407
    85% (Kg): 1196
    Towing Capacity (Kg): 1500
    Towing Capacity (Lbs): 3306

    Info above taken from http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.asp#tab1

Which I'm afraid negates your 3.5 tonnes to tow above 750kg statement completely.
Consider this: The average full sized 2 horse trailer weighs in at about 1 ton unladen. How can anyone tow that if you're statement is correct?
