Car Servicing?
Comments
-
Look in the service book which came with your car, it will show you exactly what needs replacing and checking for the mileage you are at. That will give you an idea.
l
Most cars have minor services (oil / filter / minor bits) and a major service (oil / filter / load of other bits checked or replaced).
Price wise, they vary loads depending on where you go. As a guide part wise, oil filter costs about £8, and oil will vary from £3 a gallon to £30, with a "decent" oil being around the £18 mark. I can do a full service including changing air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, oil filter and the oil in 15minutes. I know as I did one last week. Most garages will charge 1hr min labour at £50 an hour, so for a cheapie service your looking at about £79.99.
The 1001 point check is a scam. As someone else said they have things like "has it a steering wheel", tick, "has it got 4 good tyres", tick... Also most garages will use a service as a chance to flag up extra "work" which they think needs doing. The most common one is brakes need doing. When the garage tells you that, people immediately panic thinking "omg brakes are major i need to get them done". In the mean time the garage rubs its hands in glee at prospect of making some money. Brake pads are 8quid a set for a small car and 15quid for a bigger car, brake discs are 20quid a pair. So, loads of potential for garages to make a nice bit of profit there.
Just keep your wits about you and if in doubt just say no. Get a 2nd opinion on any work.0 -
Price of brake pads and discs can vary wildly from one car to the next so it's inaccurate to say discs are about £20.

I guess it depends on the car, but in my experience, most average cars, such as the fiesta, focus, modeo, golf, polo, passat, peugeot 205`s, 206`s, 207`s, even BMW 3 series etc. all cost about the same for brake discs. Your looking at about £35 to £40 all in for discs and pads as a complete set.
Im sure if you had a porsche, ferrari, or a non average high spec car, then you could be looking at a higher cost for brake discs / pads.
If someone is in doubt, id suggest a quick call to their local motorfactors, or even have a quick look on ebay to give them an idea.0 -

I was basing it on a car I had a few years ago - 2003 Toyota Celica.
Only 1.8 with 140 bhp but decent brake discs from auto parts were over £100.....and that wasn't high performance ones.
It's the same with most things....you could pick up cheap stuff for a few quid or spend a fortune for high end item....basically to do the same thing.

The schedule will be something like ABACABAC
A is a basic oil and filter, B is a bit more, and C is the full whack.
Belts and brakes will then be at specific age or mileage on top.
AFAIK Toyota have an offer for £79 A servicing on 4+ year old cars on their website

Depends on what you are looking for really. All the local garages in my area use the same parts supplier as I do and fit the same parts to customers cars unless the customer specifically asks for genuine parts or a particular after market upgrade. Personally ive tried genuine brake discs and pads and noticed no difference in perfomance to the cheaper after market ones I use.
The last car i fitted brake discs & pads to a few months ago, the owner wanted some high performance discs (i.e. better than standard). At his request I fitted some aftermarket cross drilled & groved discs for him which cost £50 a set. So still not a huge amount of money.
Celica would be a sports car, so id expect to pay slightly more than a "normal" car for bits, but you would be supprised how cheap parts are now compared to a few years back.0 -
What's so bad about Vauxhall missing that?
Your friend did too.;)
They didn't miss it, they chose to ignore it, benefiting them by about a grand. It was also a bought in car from the auctions rather than a local trade in, as they would like you to think.
But he paid VX to do the check by buying at their premium rate.
