Best way to book this trip...

Hey all

I'm going to NZ for a wedding in Nov and want to go to Oz first for 2 weeks as I've seen lots of NZ last year.

I am thinking of doing 1 week Melbourne, 1 week Sydney, 10 days in Auckland.

Where would I start to look for flights to do this? I'm normally very good with booking travel, but have never done a mutli-centre flight before so not sure!

Cheers

I would start with a 3rd party like kayak.co.uk - multi-city search option - see what your options are, then check the individual airline's websites to see if they have better prices or not.

Edited to add - when we've done into Sydney and out of Melbourne, we booked open jaw tickets - so London to Sydney, and Melbourne to London on one ticket...and we booked Virgin Blue flights for the Sydney to Melbourne leg as (at the time, and for us) that worked out a lot less expensive than trying to book along with the main long haul flights.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Thanks for this! I'll be busy in work tomorrow ;)

Have you considered a RTW ticket?

Would a RTW ticket allow just those 2 countries though? I thought they had a set criteria (although I've not looked at them in years).

I did a rough cost today on Kayak and came up with £1600 for approx dates of when I want to go, which is a bit too pricey for me I think so will need to look at different options to make it cheaper.

3 countries as OP would have to transit North America somehow - plus he could have a stop over on the way

You can route LHR-HKG-AKL-LAX-LHR on Air NZ for the same price as a route via Asia tickets.

The service on Air NZ is excellent and they have some great seating offerings for couples - look at Economy Skycouch and the fantastic new Premium Economy if you want to upgrade a little.

You should be able to route LHR-HKG-AKL-SYD-AKL.... pretty cheaply, on an inclusive Air NZ ticket, if not, check out other side trips, or fly it all on Qantas/BA: LHR-Asia-SYD-AKL and return.

Melbourne as a side trip: grab a cheap flight in OZ.
