Bankruptcy & Civil Servants

Hello

As i have mentioned in prev posts the best solution to my debt problems is bankruptcy. However, the stumbling block is my job (civil service). I intend to ring my HR Dept & welfare officer annonymously to find out what the situation is.

If the answer is no i was thinking of taking a chance & going bankrupt anyway & not telling them. Would they find out? Is their a req to tell the court/oficial rec who my employer is & would they inform my employer. Is it true they can find out because my tax code changes.

Has anyone evergone bankrupt & not told their employer.

Thanks

  • Hi upthecreek, in the Civil Service, your job is only at risk if you have anything to do with handling money directly, i.e. pay out benefits and the like.
I have repped a few Civil Servants in this position.
Even then, the option is available to move you to a job where you are not open to corruption etc.
I would definitely speak to your PCS TU rep, who should be able to advise you accordingly. Need any further info then drop me a message.

  • I'm a civil servant (prison service) and a couple of my colleagues have gone bankrupt with no adverse consequences at work.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi there

As I've read on here, your tax code will change post BR. As MCBIRNIE25 says though, your only concern in relation to your position is whether you handle cash or allocate funds etc. Are you in that kind of role?

  • Hi Sammijane

You need to make sure you get hold of HR and get the info first. You can do it anonoymously. If you can't contact them by phone, then maybe set up a hotmail/google adress and email them.
We can't say whether it will affect your job, only HR can.

Your employer would not be informed by the OR but for the tax year in whcih you went bankrupt they would make the code zero - as a result they would ask questions. Speak to PCS as soon as possible. They can advise you whether it would be an issue.

Personally I doubt it would be.

No, your tax code is of no issue to your employer, they just have to do what the IR tell them, they have no right to question why you have a certain tax code.

    Yep :)

This was asked about a while back... there's a post by Fermi halfway through this thread that's reassuring regarding the nil tax code (hopefully it did happen!)

  • Hi All

I am a civil servant who is considering going bankrupt. I work for Department of Work and Pensions within Jobcentre Plus. I pay out job seekers allowance. If I went bankrupt would I lose my job? Does anyone know the answer to this as it seems really difficult to find out. Who do I contact within DWP do i need to contact to let them know if I wish to go bankrupt?

    Hi

Work for same dept. Know of a girl who went bankrupt who does I.S. She had no probs...but she also didn't keep it very quiet! I know Anon calls to HR aren't really a option so do ring PCS or speak to branch rep. Can you also confide in line manager? They may be able to help you. Your situation is not uncommon considering the below inflation pay rises we have endured in recent years.

As long as you don't work in finance can't see it being a prob. Let us know how you get on. x
