BT Line & O2 BB contracts coming to end next week

Hi,

I have a standard BT line contract (with free evening & weekend calls) and O2 20MB unlimited internet (£10/mth for being an O2 mobile customer).

Both contracts are coming to an end around 10th Jan and would like your advice on what I should do.

I am quite happy with O2 BB and don't really use BT for calls (although evening/weekend calls are handy just in case).

What is the process of changing (never done it before) as I'd like to keep my number and also not be without a phone line and broadband whilst switching?

I would still like unlimited BB.

Thanks in advance....Ash

My advise stay where you are, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

You might want to look at BT Line rental saver whereby you pay 12 months up front, works out at around £9.50/month equivalent, and you should be able to get your unlimited evening and weekend calls package thrown in.

O2 is one of the better ISPs.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Either switch to 02 home phone or stay as you are and ask O2 for a discount on your broadband, you should be able to get at least £2.50pm off that for another year's contract.
Switching ISP's via a MAC does not result in any downtime (maybe 1-2 hours at most), and you do not lose your number.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    word of warning!!
if you change your O2 bb package they will take your unlimited download from you.
they may promise that it will be ok but i know they will take it away
and no matter what they say you will not get it back.
i used to be on unlimited bb with them @£7.50/month
they asked me to take home phone anytime @£12.50/month
promised £20/month for bb unlimted & anytime homephone
they got it very wrong charging me £27/month and £39/month
    after many phone calls
i have been able to reach some sort of settlement but i will never have unlimited back
but having said all this O2 bb is good service

Totally second the WARNINGS from penryhn & abr not to do anything rash with o2!!!!

Remember your o2 Home Broadband contract is NOT ending!!!!
What is ending is your inability to escape without paying for a minimum of 12months paid service. You suddenly are ONLY committed to paying for the 30-days paid notice during which you can bale - eg to go to some more forward looking firm offering fibre-optic based service!

So your existing o2 Home BB subscription SUDDENLY becomes even more important to hang on to with ALL its "no-niggles" and lower price versus the "nastily-niggled" and more expensive packages on offer to new subscribers and anyone DELUDED enough to change their o2 home BB contract - eg to add the hardly attractive o2 Home Phone double-lock-in..

So if you're not happy with paying BT for the landline for your o2 Home BB, check out the MSE recommendations eg Primus can be good; personally I like Post Office Home Phone as I can bale very quickly and the free calls to mobiles over long-weekends = easy to recoup its extra cost over some.

    Word of advice

You could probably get a dual bundle cheaper
    with BT
what is the download limit on the fair usage policy?

With a BT Dual Package you can get 3 usage packages on the internet
BT Total Broadband option 1 has 10 GB usage.
What is possibly the best bargain of all packages is the Unlimited Anytime Call Package and BB option 1
which is free for the first 3 months
    After 3 Months is 16.00 a month

with 13.60 a month line rental you cannot go wrong

BT option 2 has 40 GB usage a month
this is more for medium to heavy usage as this is the Sky Broadband unlimited usage limit

Yet again there are great packages to combine with this option

    Then Finally

    BT Total Broadband option 3
Unlimited Usage until 300 GB fair usage

You do not get charged for going over BT cap your speed
    For Extremely Heavy users
    Great though!!

Note: you get the award winning BT Home Hub free with all of them all you have to pay for is the P&P which is £5.00 lol

And all these Packages have Extra Value given to your for free of up to £350 pounds

Many thanks for all your comments and feedback, in particular about the O2 unlimited BB!

I think I'll stick with O2 with the current BB package (unlimited) and may change the phone line to someone a bit cheaper than BT (or stay with BT if they offer some kind of good enough deal!)

    Thanks again, Ash

    Hi,

I think I'm going to change my phone to O2 also - already have broadband as overall its works out cheaper:

    All rounder BB (100GB limit) - (£12.25 x 12) - 3months free = 110.25
    Basic phone package - £7.66 x 12 = £91.92

Total for year is £202.17 (equivalent to £16.85/month)

Staying with O2 for BB at £10/mth + BT basic line rental of £13.60 works out over 12 months as £283 (equivalent to £25.58!)

We dont really use home phone for calls hence pointless getting the inclusive call packages (although - but not sure - I think you can add these on at a later date should you wish to do so???). Also keeps it clean for next year to move from ONE provider for both!

    What do you think?

Get the figures to hand then phone and speak to Customer Retentions (thinking of leaving option). Explain that you are looking at options and are considering moving your landline to them or your bb elsewhere and what price per month could they offer.

No harm in asking, as it should work out cheaper overall than you are paying now.

  • i have exact same in my flat - my boyfriend left o2 mobile and we phoned saying we thought about leaving and they gave us the £5 monthly discount for customers if we signed up to another year. We phoned bt and threatened to leave and will pay 10.60 a month (£3 dicount for u £6 for us) for line rental and evening and weekend

also we asked 2 days ago and were told our old unlimited package is not compatable with the home phone so u would loose your unlimited

    might be worth a think

All rounder BB package offers 100GB/month - should be plenty for us I think!
