how expensive is a gas fire?

We live in an old tenement flat and have gas central heating. The living room has a gas fire and my OH claims that this is too expensive and shouldn't be used. I am absolutely freezing and desperate to turn the gas fire on to heat the living room.

Is it too expensive to run for a couple of hours a night? I've checked the internet but can't see any information on this?

Any ideas?

To tell you more info is needed. It will be cheaper to heat one room than the whole hous if you keep the doors shut.

It will also be about 3Xs cheaper than electric. Get warm then rap up!

My best guess is it will be about 12 an hour to run on max and depending on how low you get it down to about 3p and hr.

    Thanks John
My idea is to have the central heating on and the gas fire! The ceilings are high which makes the flat really difficult to heat. The gas bill from last winter was very high which is what made my OH think the gas fire in the living room was to blame but it may well have been just having the central heating.

Think perhaps we should invest in some heavy duty curtains to try and cut down the heating bills! Have just switched energy providers as per advice on the website which is due to save us £110 a year....

    Thanks again!

Do heavy curtains make a big difference? We have pretty crap curtains but we do have double glazing.

    Thanks in advance.

We use the gas fire in the evening and turn it off about an hour before bed so the heating takes over and warms the bedroom. I am sure it is cheaper to heat one roon with a gas fire than have all the house red hot with the CH. If the gas fire is fairly modern it will be efficient to run and belt out a lot of heat for your pennies.

Hi Dixie Dean, yeah curtains are supposed to make a big difference if you close them just as it's getting dark. I stupidly took ours down when we moved in but I'm regretting it now. We have double glazing in old wooden windows but it is very old and definitely not as good as the more up to date double glazing pvc windows.
Thanks nearlyrich for your thoughts, I think I'll convince my OH that a couple of hours a night won't break the bank and ask for blankets for Christmas!!

    Thanks again
