windows 7 needs another 1 gb of ram on top of the vista requirements , not sure it will speed things up without the extra ram

why downgrade ?? XP is on "end of life" notice so they will stop supporting it

I'd do all Vista updates in one hit before using it and then see how it goes before deciding

again Vista became more Ram hungry in its later service pakcs so maybe your isue is Ram

how much does your acer come with ??

if 2gb , look at making it 3 gb

Is that just the labour charge or does it include the purchase of a Win 7 licence?

If the former then it's fair enough, if the latter then the chances of the licence being legitimate are very low (in fact probably zero).

It was the former ...but is it more wiser to get extra ram....then upgrade from vista?

1gb is realy the bare minimum for vista, for photo editing I'd be looking at 3-4gb

If you're not doing it by the books, download Win7 off the net for free.

Daft to pay someone £35. Installing W7 involves popping a CD in, selecting your time zone and typing in a username.

And 1gb is more than enough for W7, it performs better than Vista in my experience.

    Any links...thanks

not using elements hard core...it`s really just crop image and then upload, but won`t be labour intensive...other than that will be office...i,e word etc

Since the time this article was first published, Windows 7 has been officially released and Microsoft has announced the memory requirements. Basically, Microsoft recommends a minimum of 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit versions of the operating system and a minimum of 2 GB for 64-bit versions. If you plan on taking advantage of the Windows XP Mode feature, you should bump those requirements up to include an additional 1 GB of RAM.
One of the big differences here is that Microsoft's recommendations for Windows 7 seem to be a lot more realistic than the ones given for Vista. That is, with Vista, most people needed much more than the minimum requirements stated for the OS to run properly. With Windows 7, the stated requirements seem adequate. However, you're still much better off if you have 4 GB of RAM, especially if you're running a 64-bit version.
Will Windows 7 run on less? The user community says yes – Windows 7 can boot up in systems with less RAM, but remember that there is a difference between just being able to boot your PC and actually being able to do anything with it. So, if you actually plan to use any applications and don't want your system to slow to a crawl, it's best not to try to scrape by with less than the minimum.
