Old diesel estate cars - good MPG possible?

I had a Seat Toledo, the new shape saloon that came out in '99, that drove different to a Golf, more like a Bora maybe because of the saloon configeration.
An Octavia doesn't really drive like a Golf, I have driven a few newer Estates and they drive better than a Golf aswell.
Even though they are made on the same platform doesn't mean they will drive the same.
For example a Jag X type diesel is a nicer drive than the Mondeo TDCi even with the same 130bhp engine.
Don't get me wrong I like the Laguna 2, always have , but I still can't get over the number of them that went bang and where a nightmare in the first few years of production. Though I would have a 1.8 petrol one.
But I always find Renault gearboxes have a fragile notchy feel to them, this goes for all the Renaults I have owned, R19, R14, R5, R21, R25, Clio and even a Megane with the non turbo 1.9 engine, ex Surrey Fire and Rescue, though the water pump was on the way out and it needed the heater on when cruising at high speed.
I just don't trust the 1.9 engine, but this may be down to initial use of inferior oils, after all Saab made this kind of error with the Saab 95 so why not Renault with the 1.9 common rail, my wifes Clio takes fully synthetic, so as, I think Rossy, said it may be down to oil.
They are really good value, but I like the solid feeling gearbox in my Mondeo. I always feel I might break the gearstick in the Clio.0 -
Is it broken? I very rarely get below 50MPG in mine, although a hatch but that shouldn't make a difference of over 20%. Just out of interest, I only use 6th gear once I'm on a motorway or dual carriageway and can do 70MPH unimpeded. Other than that, it never gets in 6th as it is LESS economical than using 5th.
Nah its not broken, Just the type of journeys i do, Inlaws to docs & hospital etc. 3 miles in busy traffic to get to theirs. Park 50/100yards from their door. Then pull upto the door to put them in the car, drive to the docs 1/2 mile away which sometimes means moving the car several times, Rarely any parking spaces near the door.
Take them to the shops which are on a dual carriageway, So i have to park one side then drive around to the other side afterwards. To get them close enough.
As i said even a short 3 miles on the bypass increases my MPG. Trip to blackpool helped the one tank average 48mpg. I would imagine several trips like that on a tank you give much higher readings.
Even towing a caravan i get over 30mpg so not all that bad really.
Yep i did notice 6th is only useful above 60mph, Less than that and the average mpg drops.
4th at about 38mph appears the best. I got 62mpg average after filling up & driving back carefully. BORING though zzz....Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
