Old diesel estate cars - good MPG possible?

  • Many thanks for all the ideas so far.

One specific point - am I unlikely to get much better MPG from a Focus 1.8 TDCi compared with a Mondeo TDCi 2.0?

Looking at Parkers, there is roughly a 200-300kg weight difference and the original quoted MPG figures are a bit different - 48 for the Mondeo compared with 53 on the Focus.

Obviously in the real world with cars that are several years old, I'm not going to get those MPG figures - but can I still expect the Focus to be about 10% more economical than the Mondeo?

Look on https://www.fuelly.com to see real world mpg figures. MPG isn't the be all and end all. You need to consider whether the focus will be cheaper to buy and insure as well to see if its cheaper than the mondeo.

My Laguna II is on 152k now

Drives like new and averages 42mpg around town.

Averages 55mpg on the motorway sitting at about 65-70

They are not as bad as people make out.

They were prone to the turbo's blowing up when using semi-synthetic oil. Renault reduced the service interval from 18k to 12k and changed the oil to fully synthetic.

They are comfy and very roomy.

I paid £1,495 for mine and it's serving my purpose very well
