I dont think in this day and age, people can be too fussy about where they work, or just MOVE closer.

    You are an idiot.

Remember though that for house owners (even a modest semi) in South East UK there's a moving tax of about £10k - it is called Stamp Duty.

Getting a mortgage and buying a house carries with it the burden of no longer having mobility.

It is a choice, not a necessity.

Travel is only going to get more expensive, fuel has risen above RPI for years. Living in the middle of nowhere has its downsides. Thankfully we're not America and didn't build most of our houses spaced out 20 miles from the nearest store.

The point is that you don't need to live that far away from where you work.
I could just as well live on a small island and say that I need a helicopter.

Nobody " needs " a car, they can use a bike or a moped.

apart from people like me, who are community workers....I travel up to 1500 miles per month visiting my patients across an entire county...no way I could do that on public transport...and don't think a bike or moped would allow me to carry all the supplies I need!!

Noone forced you to live 30 miles from civilization.

you dont have to live in the middle of nowhere
I used to get a night bus to work for my earliest shift @ 4.30am
they withdrew the service most days
so with no car I would have to walk 1.5 miles to a bus stop.
get a bus that takes me 2 miles from work
    then walk those 2 miles
so i would be leaving at around 2.30 for the 4.30am start
with the ar i can leave at 4am
I live and work in Edinburgh

I work in transport and have to be at work for 5.30am, the buses here run twice a week to the local market town!
    I need a car.

No, it's more correct to say you need your own transport rather than car per se.

My standard answer is to recommend a motorcycle - cheap to run and very economical :)

Good exercise though if you were to walk it? ;)

I used to walk from the city centre to Sighthill and back for a job when I was utterly skint - it can be done :)

good exercise maybe. however its a lot of dead time
I generally get about 6 hours of sleep a night
so getting up earlier would cut into that
getting home by bus takes longer again.worse if have to go via uni or he nursery
its all about time for me
