Exactly, it is a " convenience " as I said before.
Nobody " needs " a car, there are many people that do not drive, they manage just fine.
We are getting off the OP point here a little.
It is up to indivduals to decide if they need a car. The OP has decided they do (rightly or wrongly) so we need to advise them on the best course of action.
This site is full of helpful advice but also some very opinionated people (im am guitly of this also), lets see if we can help the OP.
My advice would be to stick with what you know, i like a few other posters had a range of cars up to a couple of years ago. I often think of the financial position i would be in know if i had not purchased the Toyota and Audi Convertibles. Yes i did enjoy them but not enough to warrant the huge depreciation and repair costs. I know have a 99v plate audi a3, cost me £1500 a year ago and will sell for similar in feb and share my fiance's car.................my advice - my other half has a new citroen C1, costs £110 a month, £15 road tax a year, £35 to fill up and 450 miles to a tank - VERY CHEAP AND RELIABLE MOTORING. I would keep your curent car and focus on keeping it reliable and paying it off asap
This is just my opinion and preference and will not suit everyone.Mortgage overpayment01/05/11 - 31/12/2011£5000/£7000End of 2012 target£84000 -
However living 30 mins from civilisation (spelt with an S) would save me about £200,000 on my house price which is a bigger saving than going without a car...
Both spellings are perfectly accurate, if you'll excuse the pedantry.
That's a bit of a daft comparison to make. It would make more sense to say you got a bigger house.
And if you have one of the rare jobs in which you do NEED a car, I'm sure you don't need a brand new one. If you do, the company should be sorting you out with that.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

Nobody " needs " a car, they are a convenience, but not an essential.
I work in transport and have to be at work for 5.30am, the buses here run twice a week to the local market town!
I need a car.
We actually have two an £800 Volvo and a £400 SaxoWas a 40 a day smoker for 20 years.
Decided to give up, and haven't had a fag for 12 years.
Halfway through losing six stone.
Looking forward to early retirement.0 -

The point is that you don't need to live that far away from where you work.
I could just as well live on a small island and say that I need a helicopter.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

Don't do it!!
Look at my sig,I'm talking from experience.
I took a personal loan for a car then stupidly decided to buy another of finance. I am paying for a car I haven't even got!
I am 23 and I too am starting to think about moving out but can't because of this horrible debt! Luckily both my loan and finance end at the back end of this year.
Please just manage paying your current car, keep it serviced regular and you will find out of any faults before they get worse.
Buying the 'new' car has Been the worst decision of my life along side accepting a credit card! Please don't make the same mistake.
Good luck.

I would not worry about servicing a car, after a 7 year practical test I have discovered that it is pointless. We bought a ford focus in 2003 with 9000 miles on the clock- we had it serviced once and thought it was a ridiculous cost for the work they do. Since then we have had the cam belt changed at 100,000 miles and no other routine maintenance. Brakes and tyres get changed when needed. Every year it fails its MOT. The number plate light is corroded. Aprt from that it runs OK. We might even get it serviced for tis next MOT as it will be up to 200000 miles then.
The thought of Paying £200 per month car paymnet on top of 3-400 for petrol would just be ridiculous.
Actually the car should last a bit longer as we no longer work 200 miles from home0 -

You are a !!!!. There are many people who could not get to work without a car, or to the shops.
Not everyone who lives in the countryside, live in large manors with millions in the bank. In my village, there is a bus every 90 minutes. There is no stop close to my work, or a stop that wouldnt require 3 changes and a 60 minute walk.
Without a car, I would be sacked.0 -

Remember though that for house owners (even a modest semi) in South East UK there's a moving tax of about £10k - it is called Stamp Duty. And then you never know if your next job will be near where you move to. And sometimes your spouse/partner works in the opposite direction.0
