How much are you paying for water?
    I'm a smidgen under £1 a tonne.

That is 10 litres for a penny.

Where I live it is "drier than Rome".

We won't quibble about at what temperature a cubic metre weighs a tonne;)

Have you forgotten the cost of sewerage for your £1 a cubic metre supplied water?

I live in the Midland - Severn Trent area - and for 1 cubic metre I pay £1.4607 for supplied water and £0.8860 for sewerage. So ignoring standing charges, each litre cost 0.23467 pence.

My Bosch washing machine uses between 59 litres and 80 litres per cycle - older machines use a lot more and the August 2011 WHICH report stated that new machines used between 31 and 60 litres for a 5kg cotton wash.

So the cost of water for my machine's wash cycle is 14p to 19p.(compared to 4p to 6p in electricity costs for most cycles)

Severn Trent's water/sewerage is one of the cheapest in UK - the poor souls in the South West pay almost double. Someone there with an old machine could be paying close to 50p in water costs each cycle.

Septic tank:D:D. It has saved me a fortune over the last 35 years.

Correction: I was looking at last year's bill (this year's had been being used as proof of residence.)
Standing charge per year 35.50 less 3 for direct debit = 32.50 (up from 27.90 )
    Price since 01apr11 121.49 p
"Inflation is still less than 5%" ??????????

My Bosch washing machine produces only a dustbin full of effluent on most cycles.
The dustbin was a donation from a cannabis farm, but that is another story. I must check its volume.
In summer conditions the contents of the dustbin are used for watering the plants.
[A hosepipe left running costs serious amounts of water/money, that is why rich people in the Thames basin are drilling bore holes down to the underlying chalk.]
  • Would appear that Sunny Boy are attempting to solve the intelligent use of Solar PV with their Home Manager device (due next year - bet its not cheap!).

See Sunny Boy website and go to products - monitoring systems - home manager.

  • We have just bought 12 solar panels and should have them put on the roof within the next few weeks:T.
We are keen on hearing any advice from those who have it running already as we want to make the most of the electricity produced by these panels. We have read with interest the different "tips" and we will try to give ours as and when. Keep posting and I am sure people will keep reading.

  • From today's email:

"Urgent! Free solar subsidy could be slashed"

Some good news - and while this bit is correct:
Rumour. Feed-in tariff being slashed. These are strong mutterings it may cut by 50% for those installing panels after 31 March 2012 though not for those already signed up. This isn't surprising, as the cost's effectively covered by higher energy bills, so is a bizarre poor-to-rich subsidy. If you want to take advantage, as it takes time to sort, hurry. It could mean the end of free solar.

I'm not so sure about this bit:
Electricity savings c. £90-£180/year - according to the Energy Saving Trust. Solar panels require a roughly south facing roof, and daylight (not sunshine, thankfully).

It's actually been agreed by EST and Which that an average of £70 is more likely

We have generated 66.95 kw in the last 12 days.we have a pre paid metre so we can see
When we are using elec from our supplier and when we are using what we produce and so
Far with the help and suggestion from here we have saved £3.00 each week on what we

The dustbin was a donation from a cannabis farm, but that is another story. I must check its volume.

Well the dustbin is stamped 80 litres so I have measured a coloured wash and estimate it at about 70 litres.

So call it a marginal cost of < 10p a wash for the water.

The dishwasher is about a third of the clothes washer.

Am I right in thinking that Bosch is piloting a technology where the appliance saves the last rinse from yesterday and used it as the first was for tomorrow (IYSWIM)?

Anyone want to link this red herring through to a thread on waste/rainwater harvesting.

    .

However most people don't have a septic tank, so pay a sewerage charge to take that 70 litres away. Another 6p for me!
