So now I have a solar PV system how do I make the most of it???

8.7kWh today
well past my PVGIS estimate for the month
Sorry Don, you must be making it up. We all know that PV doesn't work in these latitudes and certainly not in winter - must be true because Cardew said so!:):):):):)
Sorry Cardew, couldn't resist a little fun at your expense after having watched all the bickering on the other threads.
Very interesting to see peoples real world outputs, especially in winter. Have to day I'm starting to think PV has a lot more to offer.0 -
What's happened to you Don? I've done 11.5kwh here today
Already 10kwh over the January climate pvgis figure and still 3 days to go :T0 -

yeah, 173.5kWh so far this month.
very happy0 -
Hiya Sally, where you been? We've missed you.
As you've probably noticed, things get a little overheated, when there isn't a lovely lady around to put us silly blokes back in our place.
Regarding Don's numbers, they are fascinating (if you're a little odd like me). For a south system (doesn't really work for E or W) having a steep roof makes very little difference to the annual total generated, but has a huge effect on 'when'.
Playing with PVGIS, a 50deg roof gets 50% more Dec generation than a 20deg roof, but loses out to the 20deg roof in the summer, thus spreading generation more evenly.
My system varies from 50 to 400 (Dec to June), Don's is about 150 to 450.
So 8 to 1 for me, and 3 to 1 for him. Live and learn as they say.
Mart.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Ha ha Don, how the mighty have fallen!!!!
Mysterons, finally a system that can put up a fair fight. Are you still generating 'stupid' amounts?

This January has been exceptionally good, I'm already at 164kwh produced for this month and it's not over yet.
My current FIT's quarter ends on 4th February and by tomorrow I'll be due £200 even if it only turns out to be a 'couple of kwh' day :beer:0 -

tip: try maths instead of bullsh1t
As the monitor measures current and displays power, the calculation would simply be wrong, and I really think that you know it, so there's no need to even consider the maths, just the logic Watts=VoltsxAmps, excluding power factor correction - but as the OWL cannot measure the power factor that additional element is irrelevant anyway ....
From what I can see, most join a community such as this to ask for assistance, or to provide assistance, or simply to learn ... on the other hand the are some who join to promote product (spam) or to simply agitate for pleasure (troll).
I, along with others, have attempted to help and instead of taking ideas aboard for consideration there is simply abusive retort which is consistant with one who is serial trolling. If you would like assistance in solving the issues you describe all you need to do is re-read previous posts and understand what they are actually saying .... not being open to this approach simply reinforces a very stereotypical profile.

Further to this "entertaining" exchange, I checked the accuracy of my OWL against the inverter display this morning. I have mine set to 250V as I believe this fairly accurately reflects the voltage being generated. For a high reading on the inverter, e.g. 1.7kW (I have a 2kWp system) it was under-reading and showing about 1.6kW. For lower readings on the inverter it was over-reading. I think I was allowing for the time lag before the OWL updates, but it's tricky when the readings are so variable and the inverter display updates a lot faster than the OWL. Anyway, I'm perfectly happy with OWL for giving me a quick spot-check of the rough amount being generated. I obviously wouldn't even consider using it to meter the output, I have a perfectly good generation meter for that!
that's really interesting
you have it set at 250V but underreading at 1.7kW, that needs to be investigated more.
mine has always overread.
i think we all agree that its less accurate at low readings.
and more accurate at higher readings.
and as i surmised, less accurate in winter.
and more accurate in summer.0
