Sadly true.... Yet woe betide any "queue jumper" that dares to use the right hand lane of a dual carriageway

My wife and 2 kids can travel from Peterborough to Inverness and back on their bi-annual trip to see her family for a whopping £31.50 - thats after the increase. If they took the car, they'd manage to get to about York and back for that amount!0

Rail is something I use to visit someone or go on holiday.
If you're travelling 50+ miles every day you should probably consider moving. To the argument about central london jobs, I can find flats for £80pw in Westminster.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -

Rail fares are subsidised by all of us taxpayers, so it is good news that are increasing, as far as I am concerned.
Agree 100%.
I'm all for an easier to use ticketing system, but something must be badly wrong if 50% of fares are subsidised by taxpayers and yet are still deemed too expensive, too overcrowded and too unreliable.0 -

The free travel that Railway staff get is already taxed to the tune of about £600 a year.0 -
Why? We pay enough tax as it is...newfoundglory wrote: »The government can start by taxing rail staff who get free travel on the railway and underground. Can't answer for LU workers or TfL in general, but my Tax code has remained unchained sinse befrore joining the rail industry and I enjoy my free staff travel and 75% off other operators' routes...Tax free (at least by the time it reaches me!). Unless of course I'm secretely being taxed on it. Why shouldn't rail staff have free travel? It's a perk of the job. Met Police officers get free travel around London and travelling in to the city within a 70-mile radius. BTP get free travel on trains anywhere, on and off duty, as do many other Police Forces. Not sure on written agreements with the Police, but my understanding of it is, that by using a Warrant Card to travel, you are committing yourself to help out if it all goes wrong for whatever reason (namely if a disgruntly 'passenger' starts causing trouble etc). That being said, surely a TOC's own staff should get travel perks over that of a Police Officer?johnfarquhar74 wrote: »They already do! The 'benefit in kind' has a value and their tax code is adjusted so ultimately they do pay for it.
In addition, all staff entitled to a 'free' travel card pay for it whether they use it or not, a fair percentage of serving and retired staff with this entitlement make no use of it whatsoever.
I don't necessarily agree with fares increases, however, there are a lot of contributing factors towards them. For example; Fare Evasion, Inflation, TOC fat cats and the Government. The problem is, people will see the fare increases as another excuse to dilliberately not pay for their travel. That, however, in turn, makes (wrongly or otherwise) TOCs able to justify further increases. Of course, petrol/diesel has gone up now too....Or seems to be increasing every other day at least! Catch 22 surely? £1.28 a litre of fuel (plus other motoring expenses), or £5,000 a year on the train? Yes trains are often over crowded, but that's just the way it goes.0 -
