I have a Nokia E55 on which I used to have contacts on the middle soft key but somehow it is now on the button on the right of the screen. Does anyone know how I can change it back. I have no idea how I managed to change it, but I am trying to work out how to use the voice activated dialling so have been messing around, unsuccessfully I might add, so have obviously pressed something I shouldn't have. Still can't work out how to do the voice activated dialling either.

go settings> general> personalisation> standby mode> shortcuts and then set them to which key does what.

to use voice calling hold down the right selection key till you hear the beep and say the person you want to call how it is written in your contacts, eg if it is written Joe blogs say 'joe blogs', if it is written joe b say 'joe b' you cant just say 'joe' unless you do a custom voice command.

Thank you so much for that, it is so helpful. Got the voice calling sorted and understand what you are saying about going into standby mode to set each key but in the shortcuts screen, there is only the option for left or right key selection, not the middle key. Any idea how to change that key please?

judging by this webpage there will likely be a setting somewhere, you may have to just go through the settings.

might even be something simple like holding the selection key over the highlighted app you want to be shortcutted.

It sounds like you may have changed the standby mode from 'normal' to 'active standby'. Active standby gives you configurable panes of information on the home screen (shortcuts to apps, next calendar entries, newest emails etc) all of which would typically change the middle softkey to 'open'. I suspect that you need to turn this active standby mode off to regain use of the middle softkey. Possibly Menu --- Ctrl Panel --- Modes to turn this on or off.
