USB and Win98SE Woes

A friend of mine has an Old Win98SE PC and its on its last legs so he wanted all 400mb of his files saved and he only has floppy support as his CD Drives are ROM only and apart from saving to my USB flash drive (pen drive) the only other option is to upload to yousendit and that would take ages.

The problem is that when I plug my generic pen drive in nothing happens, I have also had a look on the USB man site but I am getting a little bogged down in technobabble.

I think I have to download drivers but im not sure which ones for "generic drive's" I could really do with some help chaps.

:)

You can let Windows search for a driver online, by going via the Control Panel and System hardware.

Try downloading the generic driver from here and see if that helps. (Double click to install, follow on screen instructions).

  • If your PC is to hand, remove his hard disk, pop it into yours as a slave disk, then copy the files either to your hard disk, pen drive or burn to CD.

I was actually thinking about this about 20mins ago but I wanted to get USB support working, I hate 98se there I said it :)

They have tesco net with their crap software for their Broadband aswell so they were gonna stick in a new HDD but carry on using 98 as they are both in their 100s, and the USB problem may still be about. lol

Is your drive backwards compatible with USB 1.1?

That I dont know, but Iv'e saved all info from the HDD by using it as a slave and I have now done a fresh install of Win98se plus all progs, now all they want is to have a HP printer installed and the Tesco modem Speedtouch, and they all come with USB driver disks so I should (fingers crossed) be ok as the actual PC works fine now with the new HDD as thats what im using now, well I did until im just about to turn off and put my PC on, Id never thought Id say it but Oh joy for XP :)

    And a big thankyou :)

Proper USB support of 98se is rubbish at best. I found I needed to plug the pen drive into an xp machine to get the full details of the pen so I could download the proper drivers. Worked after that but for every new pen drive a new driver is required as the generic ones don't work for everything.
