Trying to refund Ebay sale Paypal Not Permitting

Am trying to refund an ebay transaction. Have both a bank account and credit card linked to my account but it won't let me issue refund. Have a zero balance as keep hearing horror stories of them freezing accounts. How can I transfer money in to refund this seller? Thanks

  • Should I advise the seller to open a dispute so that the money can get transferred?

Why do you need to reimburse a seller? If this is a repayment, (have you had a refund and need to repay for an item?) then just make a new payment and link it to the goods you are paying for.

  • Sorry I put wrong information in, I am trying to refund a buyer whose goods have been lost in the post. Wanted to do it as a refund so it shows properly through ebay and also to get refund of all fees.

you can open a 'case' and get the buyer to cancel the transaction? have had a few of these this xmas, one case was a woman who bought an item at 99p then said she could not afford it as her son was ill (hmmm) so I opened a case as she, the buyer has to cancel too
You can find all links on the help pages...

Best to get the refund sorted first as no buyer will agree to a mutual without a refund in their bank. Also in your case I would have gone for a full NPB and not risked a mutual, but of course a mutual is the only way forward for the OP here.

OP, log into paypal and try refunding the original payment again, it may have been a glitch that prevented you from doing it before. If it still doesn't let you refund then you will have to add funds to your account before the refund will go through and this can take a few days so keep the buyer informed.

It never used to be posssible to refund without there being an available paypal balance, but the last one i did it allowed me to refund even without a balance and just drew funds from my linked bank account to cover. Maybe it varies, with paypal I never quite know what they are doing!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I was wondering whether you could help.

I opened ebay dispute with a seller who refunded me on 23rd Dec. However Paypal say the refund is pending till 4th Jan.

Is this usual? And if the refund does not go through what do I do next?

    Thanks.
  • surely if the item got lost in the post, it is royal mails problem, not yours or the buyer's?

If you sell something and it is lost in the post, it is your problem. Refund the buyer then you claim from Royal Mail.

Last time I had to refund it looked like it would take it from the balance already in paypal and the rest from my bank account but only after I had done it, it said it was "pending" until it took the money from my bank a/c
So I imagine thats what has happened here, the seller did not have enough cleared funds to refund you and will have to wait for more funds from their bank for the payment to go through. It does not tell the seller this is going to happen until after you have set it up.

The reason I posted on this thread is because I didn't want my query landing in google.

Ironically the damn thing arrived today. I asked for it to be sent RD, which she did on 6th Dec. The item is also not as described. Listed as NWOT, but it was used. I found the same item in her buyer feedback!

I have refused to accept the item, so it should be sent back to her on the same tracking number.

Very upset and annoyed with this seller for obvious reasons. Although I asked her to send it RD originally, in her last reply to me she accused me of being a scammer ( pretending that the item had not arrived when it had) and she is coping with the death of her teenage son.

That reply was after I had promised not to leave any form of feedback at all.

Just hope the refund goes through tomorrow.
