Need to know which is the better option - Petrol or Diesel ?
All help gratefully received.
Situation as follows;
Likely to buy 2nd hand Nissan Note ( 2 year old or so)
Drive about 10,000 miles per year - unlikely to change much.
Not much motorway, to & from work, everyday stuff and kids taxi.
Petrol 1.4 Note does about 46 mpg (combined)
Diesel 1.5 Note does about 60 mpg (combined)
Plan to run the car for about 5 years.
Thanks in advance for the advice,
Happy New Year, Bob

Best bet imo as long as the initial car purchase is not much more than the petrol versionIf Adam and Eve were created first
.Does that mean we are all inbred0 -
Price difference of the two cars?0

Looks like about £1800 to £ 2000 more for the diesel version,

Work out the mileage you do and see how long it will take to get that back.0

Good shout Gene.
The cost saving over MPG to the initial outlay of the car may take ages to recoup
Many overlook that and just base the purchase on MPGIf Adam and Eve were created first

OK, here goes with some maths...
At current fuel prices...and let's face it they will only go up. But the difference in price per litre may well stay the same ???
The diesel should use about 760 litres a year ( @£ 1.30 ) = £ 988
The petrol should use about 990 litres a year ( @£ 1.27 ) = £ 1257
Difference is £ 269 per year.
If the price difference in the two motors is (say) £1750 then it takes me 6.5 years to make the diesel better value....
Hmmmm - think that is called food for thought .....
How did I do ?

well i'm carp with maths but it looks about right.
Diesels tend to cost more to service though so you need to budget for that too.. You'll probably find to recoup the difference will take even longer
However I'd still go for a dieselIf Adam and Eve were created first

He likes that but the petrol is the money saver over 5 years.0 -
