My guess would be that he reversed into a tail lift or something similar. If it's just broken the rear window of the op's car and not done any body damage it would need to be something 'sticking out' at about 1 - 1.5 metres high.Firstly seeing as nobody has asked it, how did he manage to reverse into something 8ft wide and at least 10ft tall?Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !0 -
It does not matter how the damage was done to the rear windscreen, it is irrelevant.
Similarly, to question the OP's account is rather unfair. The discussion point is, does a telephone request for a quote imply a verbal contract for work to be done.
Short answer is no, not at all.
Did the OP make it clear to AG when they phoned to say they were on their way, that she wanted a Quote and not the work to be done? Only she knows.
If AG did unauthorised work, then she should discuss the matter with them.
The OP should check her phone records and make a note of when the phone calls were made.
The suggestions previously mentioned give you your options;
1) Pay the AG bill.
2) Refuse to pay, but ensure you ask AG to remove the glass, and photograph the car before the removal and after to document any damage caused by the removal of the glass.
3) Refuse to pay, but expect a debt collector on your doorstep, and be prepared to go to court.
4) Send by recorded delivery a cheque for what you feel is a fair amount, together with a letter stating that you are offering the money in full and final payment for the replacement glass. If they cash the cheque (which they may well do in this economic climate), then I can pretty much guarantee you will win any action they may try to take to recover any balance they feel owed. As they have by cashing the cheque accepted full and final payment. Obviously keep a copy of the letter as evidence, and get proof of delivery. A tactic successfully used by a lawyer friend of mine.
Hope this is useful.Rexy

We live more than 2 hours away from the airport and therefore I couldn’t collect it (small children at school etc.).
I asked my insurance company if I could use Autoglass and was told that I could, but that they would only pay up to £150.
That is the last I heard from anyone until the next day when I had a call to say that the windscreen was fixed and that I had a bill of over £700 to pay!!!
.
If someone had called you and said 'get to the airport car park and we will give you £700' would you have taken a taxi?0
