multifuel stove

Hope someone can help.I live in N.Ireland and about 4 years ago the housing executive came in and took my fire out and put in oil heating, which is excellent as i have a disabled son and its just a matter of flicking a switch if he says he is cold.My problem is that my bedroom is over an entry to the back garden and is freezing as it is getting the elements from all directions.when we had the snow and ice in december my bedroom windows had a block of ice covering them on the inside, the room has 2 windows and 1 radiator.I have complained since they put the oil in that i need constant heat in that room to take just the chill out of it,they sent the heat company out to inspect the room and they said that the radiator is the adequate size for the room but that the heat company will just assume there is no insulation in the roof and floor,at present i have 2 layers of insulation in the attic but cannot get to the space above the bedroom it was blocked up when built i have insulation then a wooden floor more insulation and carpet on top, like walking barefoot on ice. They refuse to put my fire back in,The guy from heat agreed with me that the fire was the best for that bedroom as the chimney ran through it and provided a constant heat source.Enough rambling i need to know what multifuel stove would be suitable to heat the water and 11 radiators. And how much should i expect to pay to have it all connected as i will be paying this myself.

  • I do recall speaking to a fitter and him telling me installing Stoves in a bedroom was illegal now due to building regs?

This info could be wrong though it was just an offhand comment from a local installer. But I would have this checked before buying a stove.

You want to replace the whole oil heating boiler (just put in for free, that you love because of a disabled son) and replace it with a multifuel stove you are going to have to pay for yourself and go back to all the work it entails...... just to heat one bedroom.
You're mad. Just get an electric fire for the one room, or stick insulation on the inside of the walls.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Nice fire hazard just sticking insulation on the inside of the wall, why would i wanna waste more money on electric bill, when i could just PAY to have the stove put in,I only wanted advice on which stove would have a suitable watt output to heat the water and all the radiators....
And yes the oil heating was put in free, but why put in oil heating when the single glazed windows are falling out and all the heat goes out through them.

    Sponk,

The problem seems to be one of heat loss, not your C/H system. This is a moneysaving website so Lotus Eater suggestions were not irrelevant.

You're proposing to throw more heat at a room that has single glazing, ice on windows and limited insulation. And you plan to cope with it by running the multifuel stove so that the chimney breast gets warm.

Instead of the stove change you plan, could you instead tackle the heat loss issues, possibly by:
    • adding further insulation under carpet and adding rugs on top
    • replacing windows with double glazing (even using very low cost window film would make a big difference)
    • using thermal lining to curtains which are close to wall and, if above radiator, gap sealed.
    • wall cladding is possible for insulation without (I believe) constituting a fire risk but this may be quite expensive
If you want more heat in the room as well (or instead) then why not put in an oversize radiator?
