i hate banks

just got my statement,
on one day a direct debit came out for 19.99 and took me £18 over my overdraft
the next day i was paid and well within my overdraft
because of this they have charged me:
-paid item fee -£15
-unnarranged overdraft monthly fee -£25
-interest on unnarranged -0.36p
total = £40.36

this does not seem fair to me, can i do anything about it?

In the future make sure that you have money in the day before direct debits are due.

You can ask if they can take back the charge but they don't have to. If the fee was £25, was this HSBC?
  • it was santander, i just find it extortionate, nearly a days wage for going over £18 for one day????
  • RBS stung me for £20.00 for going overdrawn by 53 pence overnight. I paid the 53 pence back in as soon as the bank opened the next morning, but they still charged me. (the reason I went overdrawn was because something I had ordered online had been despatched and payment taken 3 weeks before I was told it would be).

I know £20.00 prob isnt a lot compared to some bank charges but its the principle of it.

It's because it's a fixed fee rather than proportinate. So like a parking fine, you would get a £50 or whatever fine, if you were over by 10 minutes or 2 hours.
  • ok well they just annoy me, same as a parking fine would, can i live with out a bank account?

all i have going in is weekly wage, and going out a mobile phone 30 day rolling contract

can i get rid of it , is it possible in this day and age?

or - is there another bank out there who doesnt charge you for little things? maybe an non profit bank? does this exist?

i dont even want an overdraft to be honest
  • Well I closed my RBS account and opened one with Lloyds TSB because they dont charge you if you go overdrawn by less than £10.00, and if you do go overdrawn by more than this they give you until 3.30pm the following day to pay the funds into your account before they will charge.

I think more banks should do that

HSBC has a fair fees policy which includes:
Our fair fees policy means that we won't charge you for agreeing either a formal or informal overdraft request unless they occur frequently.
    • We won't charge an arrangement fee if we haven't agreed to an overdraft request from you within the last six months.
    • We won't charge you more in arrangement fees than the overdraft requested (e.g. a £15 overdraft will not cost you say, £50).
    • We won't charge you an arrangement fee for an overdraft request of £10 or less.
    • We won't charge you additional fees if it's the overdraft fees (or interest) that have taken you overdrawn, or further overdrawn.
    • We will not charge you more than one arrangement fee a day.
    • We won't charge you an arrangement fee for informal requests if your account is credited with covering funds by the end of the same day.

RBS give you until 14.30 to pay clear funds into your account to avoid any charges.

Harsh as it is, from their point of view you spent their money without asking.
Try and keep a small buffer in future. You could also ask them for an arranged overdraft to cover stuff like this.

I agree the fees are extortionate but the bank is there to make profit. You're not someone to be coddled by them - you're an ATM. Learn this and you'll enhance your relationship with the banks.
