Most diabetic people won't qualify for DLA unless they have another medical condition, preventing them from self-care.
I claimed for the reason I am off work sick and was refused it!

Being off work sick is no reason to claim DLA. It's not given for everyday living costs whilst out of work (like ESA) and it awarded on the basis of having care and /or mobility needs.

Yeh Ive been and explained that I can no longer cut my nails and she referred me to a health centre with a chiropodest and the chiropodest told me there is not the funding unless my feet have like gangreen, loss of or no sensation. She said my feet were too healthy. Ive tried claiming DLA but was refused it!

I'd go back to your GP and ask them to refer you on more strongly this time.

You could also have a look in the Yellow Pages for other private chiropodists, that would be a better price for you.

As it seems to be essential for you is there something you could cut back on say once a month so you can have this done (just guessing how often you'd need it, you know better than me).

I think you need to speak to your GP again as they are the only people who can help here. Your feet will only get worse and then will need a lot more care. It is ridiculous that these services are being cut as prevention is definitely better than cure in this case.

DLA is given for care needs and can actually be claimed by people who are working so do you have any care needs?

Are you under consultant Care (for your Diabetes) at your local Hospital ? If Not ask your GP for a referral.

At the Hospital I work in, there is a "Drop in" Foot Clinic for all diabetics that are registered as "Out Patients"

Do your local university or university hospital do chiropody? My mother sees final year students and it's less than a fiver (unless she gets asked to do it as part of their exam in which case it's free)

    Hi OP.

For a start , your in growing toe nail is a medical complaint...your doctors surgury should have a minor surgery clinic or an appointed doctor who can either remove the offending nails or cut out the section which is causing you trouble.

As to the long term care of your nails , all gp practices have a chiropodist to deal with this kind of thing for diabetic patients.

My mother is type 2 diabetic and although she feels that she can cut her own nails without problem her diabetic nurse will not allow her to do her own nails !

My mum hates going to have her nails done but she has no choice in the matter.

I think you need to go and speak to your gp or someone at your diabetic clinic.

Not all GP practices have a chiropodist, if they did we wouldn't have this problem.

    Agree with the rest though.

And cheaper in the long run, too.

Maybe Diabetes UK's Careline could make some suggestions? http://www.diabetes.org.uk/How_we_help/Careline/ It does seem a ridiculous situation - foot problems are bad news for you and will be expensive for the NHS too.

Your local uni would probably do them for free, you'd be done by a student supervised by a qualified professional.

Failing that ask your local chiropody practice if they have a discounted rate for diabetic patients if they come at "cold" times of the day. As you're not at work the may discount if you come during a quiet time for them.

Failing that tell the NHS chiropodist that your ingrown toe nail is agony and you're really concerned about it. They'll have to do something if you're in so much pain that you can hardly walk.
