I think style trends have actually moved on from the straightened look to something more "undone" if we're talking modern and young-looking.

However I do think preference actually depends a lot on on personal style, whether you're a smart, smooth and chic lady or someone who likes to get their hands in their hair to style it and goes for a more relaxed look!

how about enhancing the curls rather than going for the straight look? Half hour of sticking curlers in is nice for a special occasion :)

Or if you want it straight, why not give up the hairdryer and use your straighteners? I tend to let my hair dry naturally, then add some protection before straightening. That way your hair isn't getting double the heat. I try to do one or the other and always use some heat protection. Dunno if it's helping or not but my hair is midback length, and not a split end in sight. If I could also be so bold as to suggest a good condition on the ends

How to I get my hair to look like theirs though? That is kind of what I am asking.

What products do i use? What kind of brush / comb etc

I haven't got your type of hair, so I couldn't recommend products, other than to say a shiny glossy head of hair is youthful, so products which would smooth and add shine would be helpful.

If you have a good hairdresser, I'd get advice from them, if you explain you are looking for a low maintenance contemporary look that works with your hair type.

I think you can still use heat to style your hair, without damaging it though, I use a hairdryer every night and heated tongs several times a week to add waves without problems although I do use a heat protection spray.

Sure there'll be others who can give more specific advice.

    Good luck!

I'd spend once on a really good hair stylist to give you the right cut for your hair and face, et product advice from them and thenget the cut ''maintained''by a less expensive but good hairdresser and try and explore cheaper products of the same type as the hairdresser recommends (this takes some experimentation IME but I have very different hair to that described!)

I have the same thick, wavy, tending towards greasy hair.

I find it very difficult to style my hair the way I want it wavy, and much prefer my hair straight - i think it suits me better (but then i'm younger so that may be an issue).

I'd concur with the difference a REALLY good hairdresser can make. I use Toni and Guy and will only allow one stylist to cut my hair. He specialises in afro carribean hair so he is used to dealing with unruly hair that is curlier at the root than anywhere else. it's almost double what i used to pay for a cut but it lasts longer, suits me better and i ALWAYS leave the salon happy - worth every penny in my book.

on the product front, i've just discovered a new-ish range from herbal essences. they do a 'fresh balance clarifying shampoo' which is designed for either greasy hair or normal hair that is treated with a lot of product. I can't remember the last time my hair felt so clean. Boots did have it on offer last week - BOGOF on the 400ml bottles of shampoo and conditioner (around £3 something a bottle in that size, or £2 for the smaller £200ml bottles but they weren't on BOGOF)

The biggest difference between those two pictures is the smile - your smile takes years off you.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • This is probably not the answer you're looking for but when I don't want to use straighteners on mine but I do want it to sit in a sensible shape (my hair looks the same as the first picture only some bits stick out at odd angles) I blowdry it. I don't think it's much better than using a set of straighteners for heat damage though. It does tame it though and give it less of a poker straight style that straighteners would give.
    Thank you competition posters!

My hair's like yours (same colour too) and I got fed up of it taking ages to dry especially while it's so cold outside.
So I took the plunge and got a good cut, like this lady's here....
