Why was the engineer rude?
Lots of ISP offer unlimited broadband, but is still subject to fair use.
Depending on the characteristics of the line to the property may be the cause of service outages.
My Virgin BB has been great and I only recall 2 20 minute outages in the 9yrs of my usage.0 -
after i explained that twice i should have been called back today once at 11 am and again at 3.50 and no one called me he said it is a problem with my computers and i needed an engineer, when i explained i work in a school and cant take time off and could i rearrange time he said no tough i had to make sure i had someone here and it was only time they could offer me.
i just need someone reliable and not rude0 -

I really would check the routers, if an engineer comes out and the fault is proven off the network, you may attract a per occasion charge (then you really won't be happy) .
My router here needs a reset after I have used my ipod touch0 -
Your engineer was from BT Openreach, not BT Retail, who supply your broadband. Entirely separate companies. Regardless of which ISP you use, the engineer who comes to check your line will still be from OR-so switching your broadband on that basis does not make much sense.
If you want a more competitive package and you are out of contract, then do an exchange search on www.samknows.com and look for the available LLU options.
I would second the point made about checking your own equipment first and set up first, as engineer visits are all chargeable unless it is a BT fault. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Before I suggest my own ISP who is excellent and UK based, I would strongly recommend you consider the fault is with your router or computer.
If you have had many months+ of reliable internet access and only recently it's been going wrong, perhaps it is the router or something 'within your control and your responsibility' (as BT would say!). If the fault was with BT, they would have been responsible for repairing it, but if they didn't, it could be your hardware.
Before I say anything else, as I have already said, please buy a cheap router before messing with contracts. Bear in mind that although you hate BT, the only way you would get away from them is if you had your line completely changed - as the alternative ISP of your choice, would have to use the BT line regardless of who it was.
I do appreciate your situation and sympathise, I'm sure it can't be easy. I would recommend investing in an internet dongle (connects to the internet like a mobile phone does). You could then plug it in when the net goings down - just be careful about costs. As I don't know what your typical usage is, it's not possible for me to be specific. I would normally suggest connecting your mobile phone to your childs' computer and allowing it to share the connection. But when you receive a call on the mobile, the internet connection would be cut and you'd be back to square one.
I hope I haven't over explained! If someone is worth thanking - click on the 'Thanks' button on their response. It's just a nice thing to do :-)
