If you are currently on VM cable then you have no other options without getting a BT line in first-you can't switch to any other cable provider. So you will have to factor in the install cost of a line. And any broadband service on an ADSL line will require a contract for line rental.
The price you pay on an ADSL connection will depend on what is available on your exchange. Do an exchange search on www.samknows.com and look for your available LLU options, these will be the best deals.
VM should be willing to upgrade your cable modem for free (as this is their equipment that you are renting during your contract)-if it were to become 'faulty' then they are obliged to replace it...
If the router is faulty then that is your responsibility, not VM's. But a replacement cable router can be had from about £20 upwards. Rather cheaper than installing a BT line.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • If your mobile provider is O2 then you can get a fiver knocked off their broadband packages. (use this to haggle with Virgin)

I am in the exact same boat I just want standalone broadband on it's own.

At the moment I pay £36 for landline, 10mb broadband and XL TV with Virgin which is a pretty good deal I had to haggle for it and threaten to cancel, however the XL TV is not all that and I rarely watch the extra channels, so thinking scrap the landline, scrap the TV and just get Free Sat then standalone broadband.

I bet you could get them down to £15 if you speak to customer relations. Tell them that you do like their service but that you don't feel that they're very competitive anymore and that you can get a better deal elsewhere.

The first time I haggled I was lost for words cause the guy said just tell me how much you want to pay a month... He said how about we knock £10 a month off your bill for next 12 months!!! They can be crazy generous sometimes if they want to keep you as a customer

If you don't need a phoneline then how about mobile broadband with a dongle ?
