Its been 12 years since I first posted in this thread on page 1 :) Since then I've bought a few houses, built an extension, bought a camper van and been on lots of nice holidays.

I'm back saving again now, to afford a nice garden room for next summer. Those things cost 20k! So far I've got about 4k saved up.

Is this money tied up or just sitting in cash?

The rates in the 3rd post of this thread, if only :rotfl:

    12% at A&L
    10% at Barclays
    8% at HSBC
8% at LLoyds (especialy good as this is a 2 year account)
You need current accounts at the above to open their regular savers.
8.25% at Ipswich BS (with some windfall possibilities thrown in).
    7% at Halifax
6.5% at Yorkshire BS (and no 12 month rule here, either - a good option).
    6.5% at Principality BS.

Got to wonder why anyone would have invested in the stock market in those years, when the returns from cash were so good

From memory those were just regular saver accounts with maximum deposits of £250 a month or something. The rates were great, but not much use when you could only put small amounts.

Cash. Most of it is in bonds earning decent interest, I also have a HTB ISA at 4% (about £7k in it so far). The rest is earning a paltry 1.5-2%.

I have a final salary pension too, I don't count that in my savings.
