I started working in April after being a student living on a bursary for 3 years! I saved £1000 a month for the first few months and used that to buy a car and pay for the insurance etc. I can't drive yet but my husband can, I'm currently taking lessons.

From the end of Sep I'm aiming to start my 'house deposit savings'. I can't start this month as I'm lending money to my Mum for her to fix her broken cooker.

I want to save £10,000 by the end of 2011 and then go on from there. Probably looking at £30000 in total. Unfortunately I have the problem of my husband being in an IVA until end of 2011 (all from debts that he built up before I knew him).

So at the moment my house deposit savings stand at £0

guys, i wish i could save! im one of those people that has to save to feel secure but at the moment i just cant seem to. as soon as ive saved up some money something pops up that needs paying :( i dont have any debt but sadly my other half racked up 38k before i met him and now its catching up with us (unlike me, he's a bit of an ostrich!) i havent got a penny saved (my signature may say otherwise but my maternity pay stops next week and i have no job to go back to so that will soon get swallowed up!) and having 2 children, the other half, the cat and a very expensive house(rented) with very expensive bills to support and pay for doesnt leave me with much at the end of the month. ive explored every avenue when it comes to getting more money and im drawing blanks. housing benefit-we earn too much. CTCredits-we earn too much. working full time- 800nursery and school clubs when i'll probably only earn min wage=100 if im lucky. moving house-all we will save is 107 per month. 'a hundred pounds is a hundred pounds' i hear you say! yes it is, but i live in a very large 3 bed house with the 3rd bedroom(nursery) not in use. my baba is 4 months old so still with us in our room. for the last few months we've hosted students and the money we made got swallowed up on bills and keeping our head above water. so i'd rather not move, i want to make the house work for us-im thinking of fostering. i get to be a stay at home mum(to one more)have a very rewarding job and get paid a very generous sum for doing so. so with any luck i'll be able to join this thread soon-even if it is only the small savings group! i'd like to thank you all for keeping me going, i KNOW i can achieve my targets and aspirations soon :) xxxx
    £20k in 2023 = £2718 £2023 in 2023 = £196.41 Grocery challenge £250= £195.80 **MONEY MAKES ME HAPPY**

Sorry, nat21luv, are you considering fostering to make some extra money? If you're struggling, I don't think the extra stress is a good idea...

In my own news, work hasn't pair my expenses so I've missed my target of 41k for this month by 50 pounds, which I'm really quite gutted about as it wasn't my fault! Grrrrrrr! Hope it comes through in the next few hours or someone's getting a ratty email!

Even though you missed your target by 50 pounds, that is an impressive sum you've accumulated so far that you must be very proud of.

    Well Done :j

I know you'll take any comments from anonymous contributors with a justified pinch of salt, but this feeling may not go away. I'm in exactly the same boat career wise, am 27 and feel exactly the same! I've spent the last 2-3 years hoping that I'd suddenly stop hating my job, but there hasn't been the 'dumbing down Eureka! moment' that I'd expected when I learned to tolerate the job. It's a bit of a catch 22, because I'd struggle to earn as much as I do elsewhere at the moment...

    Back to the savings ;)

S&S ISA for the month - payment made
    Cash savings - £620 saved
Honeymoon - £180 saved, up to £360 thanks to a generous gift from my parents!

No pinch of salt needed - I'm certain you're right. I've been in to work to get ready for the start of term and already it's getting to me. I'm definitely going to finish the next (school) year because then I'll be fully qualified, but also do the introductory course to keep my mind focused on positive things. I want to re-assess my situation early next year as I'm on a yearly contract so I have no idea if I'll even have a job after that!

All this just increases my need to save while I can! Despite going away over the weekend I still managed to have some money left over at the end of August so have just added £47 to my ISA + £3 interest has gone into last year's ISA taking my total to £1800!:j

Im in a similar position, aged 24 and recently took a job which i thought id be able to bare but hate!! However the pay is ok (outside london id be brilliant) but most of all i need to finish the training program, get the experience then after 18-24months can get out of here!

As long as your being proactive to find something better/improve ur skills with p/t training it makes it easier.

Iv been lucky tht a family friend is putting me up in london almost rent free (£50p/w all inc) so will have much more to save for tht deposit!
